Friends: The Complete Series Collection

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

I watched Friends when it initially aired and am rewatching the entire series with my twenty-something offspring, who enjoy the show as much as I did (and do). We are watching at the rate of two episodes per day.

Friends has withstood the test of time. Enormously popular in its heyday, it remains so popular as I write in early 2019 that when Netflix said it would pull the show when 2018 ended, the resulting outcry led Netflix to renew its Friends contract.

A Pro: When we all originally watched the series, there was a weak season, so weak that many thought the show should end. Friends rebounded and went out with a bang. Watching now, I can’t even tell which was the weak season!

A Con: Friends could just as easily have been named The Ross and Rachel Show. When Friends initially aired, all of America wanted Ross and Rachel to get together and stay together. Rewatching the development of their relationship at an accelerated pace, their toxic on-again off-again relationship just reminds me of “that couple” from college that was forever breaking up and getting back together, with much drama, until we were all beyond sick of hearing about it. My kids do not want them to end up together and frankly can’t understand how anyone could feel differently.

Another Con: One thing that is clear upon rewatching the show now is that some of its jokes are relics of another era. Fat shaming, homophobia, and trans jokes make cringeworthy appearances. Clearly, the show would not be written the same way today. Nevertheless, the show is so good overall that even the most politically-correct-minded person will enjoy visiting with Friends.

Whether you’ve watched it before or are just considering it, I highly recommend Friends. But if you are just getting started, please do not make the mistake of judging the series based on its first episode.
