Parenthood Season 4

i love this show. The characters are really well-drawn, and the family reminds me of my crazy huge family. The three generations are a great cultural cross-cut.

But these parents are invasive and controlling and spoil their kids. In the second episode, sarah talks about her son Drew’s private business with her boss, and then bugs the crap out of Drew as he tries to recover and deal with his sadness. LEAVE HIM ALONE, mom, you’re not helping! Julia lets her adopted son stay home and play video games because he says he’s sick for two days. Every smart mom knows that if you make your kid stay in bed with no computer and no phone when they’re “sick”, they don’t get sick nearly as often. Then Julia waits outside in her car all day because she thinks that’s showing support. Her husband says, “you’re amazing”–I’d say, “you’re nuts!”. Then there are the parents with the kid with aspergers who completely runs the family. Don’t get a dog without making a deal with the kid that he has to take care of it, even if the kid has a tantrum. Actually, um, don’t get a dog, but that’s another story. The kid’s 13 years old, for heaven’s sake—learning to deal with disappointment and reality is appropriate for kids of this age. If he’s not behaving, put him in his room and let him run it down. In the first episode, Adam kicks a band out of the studio because the lead singer slept with his niece Amber, who meets the guy’s girlfriend when she drops off muffins the next day. Amber is 20. Hello? Let kids learn their own lessons, and its none of your business what happens in Amber’s sex life, Uncle ernie. The only sane person is the new boss Hank, who tells Sarah to leave Drew alone and then talks to drew in a way that isn’t icky. He tells him it’s okay to be sad, instead of trying to cheer him up.

These are parenting 101 rules, people. These parents are way too involved and indulgent, and it causes many of the problems on the show, so that’s frustrating because the problems are basically preventable. Otherwise, it’s a really cool show and I hope they renew it, because I think it’s an amazing portrayal of modern American family life, and actually, the parenting issues remind me of most of the people I know, so there ya go.

I love this TV show, because it has come together, acting and writing. I came across this show during the third season when it was well coordinated. I am a fan of Gilmore Girls and was the reason for how I was interested in Parenthood. The story lines are well crafted capturing human emotion. This is a lovable story line with three generations of the same family, and all the trials and tribulations family goes through. Some characters have developed roles like Adam Braverman as the protecting father and husband. Crosby as the adventurous yet good guy underneath the thick shell. Sarah who goes from relationship to relationship, and as such is defined by them. Julia the stereotypical successful lawyer balancing family life, Joel her stereotypical supportive husband and father. There are few stereotypical characters, however most of the characters move back and forth between their portrayed characteristics and good ones. Season four and three are by my opinion the best so far all because of writing and acting. Season five is coming back on NBC September 26th, until then I will watch marathons of these seasons. If you enjoy sitcoms based around families than other TV shows, this is a great show for you. Each show has a cliffhanger for each story arc, which keeps you hooked. This is one of the best sitcoms on TV, though there is a lack of minority representation. When season five comes out I will be ordering it from Amazon too. Until than Parenthood returns to NBC September 26th moving from Tuesdays to Thursdays.

If you enjoy a television series that makes you laugh and cry, with story lines you can relate to and characters you truly care about, you will love this show. Begin with season one and find yourself captivated by the Braverman clan as their characters, between the ages of infancy into their sixties, navigate their lives.

What I love most is watching each character evolve over the past five years (season 5 is currently being shown on NBC although it is being preempted by the Olympics through most of February 2014) as they struggle with challenges like infidelity, Asperger’s, infertility, cancer, sibling rivalry, mid-life issues, going to college, interracial love, new parenthood, political issues, financial issues, and all the other things that many families go through over the years.

This is a series that everyone can relate with characters ranging in age from infants, toddlers, elementary children, teenagers, twenty, thirty. fortysomethings, and those in their late fifties/early sixties. The backdrop for all the family dynamics is Berkley, California.

If you like to sit down, get totally engrossed in a show for hours, and feel good after you watch it, then start with Season 1 of Parenthood and work your way through all Four Seasons, then continue watching Season 5 currently on NBC (restarting towards the end of February).
