The White Queen
DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:
I really loved this series. From the script, to the excellent performances, to the lavish sets, it’s full of period detail and technical merit. As an amateur medievalist, I was very familiar with the story, and the series sticks very close to fact as we know it, while giving a nod to the book on which this is based. Elizabeth was a fascinating, smart, engaging woman in real life (and reportedly quite a beauty) who well understood what she had to do in order for she and her family to survive in a tough society and era. The ad sells this as a story about “scheming” women – I find that really cheap and insulting, and frankly that isn’t what the story is about. These women had enormous heart, did have morals, and also had the brains to play the games they were forced to play from birth. That isn’t “scheming and manipulation”, it’s survival. I want to mention especially the beautiful performance of Rebecca Ferguson in the lead role – this series garnered her some well-deserved and overdue professional attention and led to other roles. The viewer will recognize the actress playing Warwick’s older daughter as the woman playing a lead role in Poldark. And Max Irons is really fine – and great to look at – as the tempestuous, strong-willed warrior king Edward IV – the real man was as tall, as handsome, as stubborn, as impetuous, and Max nails it. Edward is remembered as one of England’s most successful kings. Anyone who loves history, wants to understand the Wars of the Roses, and great historical drama, will like this one.

Great show! I loved it! The series is set against the backdrop of the Wars of the Roses and presents the story of the women involved in the protracted conflict for the throne of England. It starts in 1464; the nation has been at war for nine years fighting over who is the rightful King of England, as two sides of the same family, the House of York and the House of Lancaster, are in violent conflict over the throne. The story focuses on three women in their quest for power, as they manipulate events behind the scenes of history: Elizabeth Woodville, Margaret Beaufort, and Anne Neville. Elizabeth Woodville is the central character in the novel The White Queen, while Margaret Beaufort and Anne Neville are the focus of the novels The Red Queen and The Kingmaker’s Daughter, respectively. However, all three characters appear in all three novels that went to make up the television series. Now I am looking forward for the sequel : The White Princess

Now the Cousins War/War of the Roses in history is one heck of a blood bath! I mean full-tilt boogie insane on how they operated and waged war over the throne. This is another concoction based off of Phillipa Gregory – she does historical fantasy fiction; so these are real time periods and people (some a amalgamation of the historic persons) . It is pretty decent as far as that goes (it was basically gossip that Richard lll was in love with his niece Elizabeth – they weren’t going to marry – I don’t know of any Papal dispensation that would ok that! That didn’t deter a lot of actual historic marriages/relations in the past—- uhhh..) I digress Max Irons (son of Jeremy Irons) is Edward VI and Rebecca Ferguson is Elizabeth Woodville. James Frain – a mainstay in these types of series (he plays such a good baddie!) is Earl of Warwick – The Kingmaker, Janet McTeer is Jacquetta Woodville – Elizabeth’s mother. They rely heavily on the hearsay that she was a descendant of Melusina a river witch/goddess. STILL it is good – I wouldn’t let the young ones watch – I mean it isn’t a PBS/BBC documentary with historic facts and historians and professors talking about it – it is actors and nudity and violence – they do not show the actual beheadings but do show plenty and I do mean plenty of the birthday suits. It really isn’t that bad – I mean the entire series is entertaining and the cast is lovely.
