Rogue Season 1
DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:
In some ways the show is a formulaic cop and mob story, but in other ways it completely diverges from it. There are really two competing storylines that are intertwined throughout the season. Thandie Newton plays an undercover officer, Grace Travis, who is under with the Laszlo crime family. She is yanked out when her son is mysteriously killed, and then goes back under (unsanctioned) when the case goes cold and it appears that it may have something to do with an attempt on mob boss Jimmy Laszlo’s life. I will not say to much more about the overall plot, but it really is a balance of those two story lines, along with Grace tying to maintain something of a stable home life, and Jimmy’s attempts to protect his empire while wanting to go legitimate.
The show very much earns its unrated status. There is a lot of violence, sex, nudity (all of which leave little or nothing to the imagination) and bad language. Much more than you see on basic cable shows like The Americans, which can get pretty extreme itself. The story is paced very well throughout the 10 episode season, and while it does have some twists it is not completely predictable. The writing and acting are all very good. Most of the characters are very flawed and multi-dimensional and the result is a well done blend of drama, crime, and who done it.
For those who get the DVDs the extras include a few behind the scenes and making of features, as well as a series of webisodes that follow one of the supporting characters on the show, Mitch, Grace’s former mentor who ends up working cold case files and is assigned to the case of her son’s murder. It really does flesh out the overall story a lot, and were likely just a bunch of scenes from the show that ultimately were deleted. They add up to basically being an entire episode worth of material. All in all there is about an hour and 20 minutes worth of extras. It is definitely not a show that will appeal to everyone, but if you are a fan of the genre, and not put off by the nudity, swearing and violence, it is worth checking out.

Enjoyed the first season immensely, just one problem, why can’t Thandie Newton and the other international actors use their own accent??!!! Why do these American series have these people talking with our cheesy American intonation! Got 4 stars even though I heard nails on the chalkboard everytime Thandie and the others spoke! Original premise for the show! Thandie as an action hero, wow! Casting very well done! It is nice to see Kavan Smith on screen again!!! I LOOOVVVVEEE that man! He’s a GREAT supporting actor without being wimpy (he certainly gives as much as Thandie is dishing out)! Very well done series! Very good writing, original, eccentric, and truly well done.

I had watched this on the audience network when it aired but what with Joshua Sasse appearing in Galavant I wanted to see it again. Interestingly, I found it less violent the second time around. I’d liked it before and liked it again this time. A warning–it is full of violence, nuidity and sex so if you are sensitive to these things give it a pass. Otherwise well worth the watch with some terrific performances by actors we frequently see in supporting roles.
