Falling Skies Season 3
DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:
Season 3 is as good, if not better, than the first two seasons. I don’t know why I missed this show at the time; I’m glad to see it now when I can watch each episode in order when I want to. We get TNT, so I don’t know.
Some writers, such as Jullian Fellowes (Downton Abbey), say that as the writer gets to know the actual actors portraying the characters, the writer can go into more depth using those persons as inspiration. I have also noticed that the cast in season one can be quite wooden and embarrassing. Star Trek Next Generation comes to mind. It was terrible the first season, even with Tasha Yar. It improved noticeably after that. It was a Ed Woods nightmare come to life.
Falling Skies has been good sci fi since the first episode, in my opinion. It comes from DreamWorks TV, Steven Spielberg, always a good thing. The star Noah Wyle I see listed as a producer.
I have been a sci fi & fantasy fan since the 1960s and this is one of the best TV sci fi shows I’ve see. I liked Jericho and Defiance, this one is as good or better than these, except I liked the bathing white skin aliens in Defiance. No sexy stuff here, though.
The characters are all good, all quite different, and difference are nuanced and not made comic bookish. The aliens are good, well, some are bad, but they are good bad. The three kids are also a good touch. Lots of generational mixing. It’s not all about misunderstood teenagers; in fact, the kids are mature.
In case you need telling; I like this show and recommend it to sci fi lovers.

One of the best Sci-fi shows ever. Slightly apocalyptic and dystopian (without the “dictator” themes), with references to the past battles, US civil war including using “Charleston” as its backdrop. Aliens of different species invade the world but the southeastern edge of the US is where these cast of characters venture to try to find stability and there is none. They have communication with other parts of the states but everything including supplies is limited. Two things that makes this show stand out more than others in the same genre…the family of Tom Mason and how they’re scripted and the SETS staging with the use of the areas natural settings offer VERY REALISTIC scenes. They don’t shy away from inclement weather and use it to their advantage. The Aliens themselves are also very real looking without looking too masky or CGI’d. The feeling is the directors took great pains to create a very AUTHENTIC feel to this series. One thing I might take exception to is the character Maggie, whose hair is always perfectly coiffed and clean. They don’t use a ton of obvious make up on the female characters, but I think their thinking must be, if guys are watching this show, they want the tough female characters to look feminine enough, Well, on that front they do, but who has freshly washed tresses in situations like these? Noah Wyle, surprisingly is suited for this role and again, the scripting emphasizes his bond with his sons who are in the midst of becoming men in their own right and it doesn’t come across mushy. There is a good supporting cast who make this show even more interesting, even the ones who you are suppose to hate like John Pope played by the actor Colin Cunningham.

We actually were enjoying the show itself a lot. I thought it had a good premise for an alien invasion show. There was pretty fair realism in how some people disagreed on how to best fight the enemy.
What keeps me from giving is more stars is how Amazon pulled a bait-and-switch on us. When we first started watching it, it was included with Prime at not extra cost. We got about half way through the third season when Amazon decided to start charging extra to watch it. I contacted customer service to complain, and their response was, “we are contunually changing our shows to best serve the needs of our customers.” Huh?
They were kind enough to give us a credit in the amount that allowed us to finish watching season 3 without any cost, but we won’t be watching any more seasons unless we can do so without having to pay extra
