Extant Season 1
DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:
I really wanted to like this, but I didn’t for the following reasons. Halle Barry is a beautiful woman and a talented actress, but here she seems stiff/strained. I think part of the problem is that the character wavers so often from incredibly strong and independent to extremely vulnerable and at the mercy of her own emotions and circumstances. The switch back and forth is too jarring.
Something’s wrong with the “bad” guys too. Even though people are dying and the world itself may perish, they’re not villianish enough to make the viewer want them to lose. Some casts gel like they were intended to play their roles from eternity, this one just doesn’t click.
I’m not convinced of the “love” between husband and wife, parents and child, the personal interest of the co-workers or as mentioned, the diabolical character of the corporate execs and their henchmen.
These relationships are vital pieces of this series because without them, there’s really no story. (Spoiler) Alien infections are about as dull as you can get, and birthing aliens has already been done (see: Alien, Aliens, etc.). The story doesn’t develop any new turns so the endless unraveling of the plot gets tiresome. By the end of the season I’m rooting for the spores, B-movie style.

The 2 main story lines (the humanics aspect and the space child) are actually interesting but come on, all the killing of people just so one guy could hallucinate his dead daughter, really just too far fetched. Make the motivation behind his deceit and murderous reign about something a bit more plausible please cause if there’s really someone on this planet who would kill a crap load of people just to hallucinate their dead loved one then we are really in deep s***.
Also, they kind of just dropped the ball on Yasumoto. We saw he was rapidly aging then poof, not another mention of him nor his love, Dodd.
On a side note, someone really needs to cut that dang hair from Berry’s face, the chunk that goes over one eye is so distracting and stupid looking. She is a class act and beautiful woman, far too beautiful to look like they have her looking in this show.
I will give season 2 a try but honestly, I think this would have been a great one season 13 episode summer show.

I thoroughly enjoy good science fiction which is unfortunately all to rare. I abhor stupid science fiction which is unfortunately all to prevalent. The season premiere of Extant opened with a bang with great characters, great acting, a great premise and a great plot. My wife and I were pleasantly surprised at how much we enjoyed the Series Premiere. However, as the season progressed more and more plot developments were added in an attempt to increase the “intrigue level”. The end result was a confusing mess. I would not mind the fact that the writers “borrowed” from either Star Trek or Invasion Of The Body Snatcher or Zombie movies. It would be interesting to see how the writers could take a well known concept and develop it in a novel context. I’m just not happy that the writers borrowed too many divergent themes and tried to force them into 1 series. I would have given this season 5 stars if they had dropped 1 or 2 of the subplots and spent more time developing the interesting initial premise.
I plan to start season 2. I will finish Season 2 if the writers managed to be creative and original.
