Covert Affairs Season 5

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

I’m fascinated by the premise, plot twists, excellent camera work, editing and pacing of this show. HOWEVER, operatives like Augie and Calder allowing their sexual feelings and liaisons to factor into their decisions strikes me as a cheap network shot for viewer titillation’s sake alone, pandering to a young turk’s view of American taste – not necessary and, frankly, tiresome. And female operatives in upscale, figure skimming office attire, running around in stilettos? Pu-leeze!

Annie’s casual attire is far more appropriate to the work we are expected to believe she does. Even though they still put her in chunky-heeled boots to compensate for her short stature, it is at least *possible* to believe she could actually take down or outrun a killer in the things.

The sneak-around, immediate-readiness, grab and go sexual scenes are far too frequent to remain fresh – a waste of too much air time, IMHO. The inappropriate choices of “love” interests (jealous, sneaky, provocative without an equal demonstration of intelligence commensurate with what one would expect) lacks credibility. Nobody at the level of the CIA operatives portrayed in this show would put his career on the line for mere sexual attraction, no matter how strong.

No wonder American TV series are becoming known as 3-season wonders, while British series go on year after year!! Character development with a reliance on good acting, writing and production values lasts – formulaic, supposedly hot scenes of the young, beautiful and sexy can only sustain a show for a while.

What a shame – this could have been a terrific show that could have returned great ratings season after season if the Network execs showed any sense. Back to the Brits?

I truly loved this show. Such great characters and great locations.. and Plenty of cliff hangers! But it’s the depth of the characters and their emotional entanglements that distinguish this series. There’s plenty of action but the flaws and emotions of the characters make it more than just an action series. If you are a fan of this type of show, you should like this one!

The last scene of the last episode of the series leaves questions unanswered, but on the other hand, it has a charm and hope for a bright future for the characters. I think one more season could have worked but I do feel OK with the ending. Did we really want to see Annie quit and retire with Ryan… or continue on as an operative until sh’e finally forced to retire, or killed? Maybe the ending is actually perfect?

Goodbye Annie, I hope you and Ryan stayed together and Auggie and all the rest of the characters continue on.. out there, somewhere…
Annie, Auggie… Joan, Arthur.. Ryan, Eyal… all of you will be missed!

Season 5 was a bitter-sweet viewing. Over the first four seasons the characters had taken on depth and range, had become believable in their roles and seemed ready roll on for several more years; but the nagging question remained: Can they be creative enough to avoid becoming repetitive? In Season 5 all of the characters moved into new roles. The only constant was that at every turn someone was out to get Arthur and Joan tossed out of their positions with the Company. As the episodes rolled by, it became obvious that this was going to be the end of the line for Annie Walker as a field agent. Her flair for risk-taking was not subdued by her health issue. It was made more dangerous. The typical shell game making us guess the identity of the bad guy was some of the best of the entire series. The surprises were believable – even blowing up the Chicago fi
