Elementary Season 3
DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:
I just viewed the 2nd part of “The one that got away”. So emotional. As a huge fan of the show, I was skeptical when a third party joined the the set, but I quickly warmed to the character that was Kitty. Strong emotions of all kinds are in play as Kitty faces her personal crises and needs to find a way to make peace with her past and execute justice upon her tormentor. And now that she is gone I just don’t know what will happen to the show. I hope she will still make future appearances. Also with all the time Joan has been spending on Sherlock’s couch she might as well move back to the brownstone.

Great series. I really don’t know why it took me so long to get into this show. After seeing other Holmesian adaptations or influeneces, where they just stretched the concept of Holmes’ deductive reasoning to him basically being telepathically psychic to know everything about everything and still everything in between (like Goren in L&O:CI) I was hesitant to get into the show, figuring I’d detest everything about it. I ordered the first season just as a “WTH, why not” kind of thing, and love the show. It dives into the mindset and logic of Holmes, without making him to be some annoying parody, like I feared. In short, the entire series is interesting, mind-boggling, and captivating. I now have the four seasons available on DVD.

Not sure where the narrative is going this season. They may yet pull everything together and make it as tight and powerful as the previous two seasons. For now just enjoying the weekly mysteries, and the ongoing evolution of Sherlock’s character. Wonder why he’s clean shaven now. Hope there will be a reveal at some point …
UPDATE: Most of my reservations about season 3 had been owing to the introduction of the character Kitty. Her presence felt unnecessary and intrusive. I take that all back now. The logic of her presence in the larger story was made clear as her arc completed, and the entire thing was, imo, well done. One of the features that I love about this series is the way the characters grow in response to their lives and each other. Makes this so much more than a one-dimensional showcase for brilliant crime-solving. I would still like to see secondary characters like Marcus and Alfredo and Gregson presented as more than the convenient go-fer / wisdom-pearl-dispenser / authority figure stereotypes. The writers have already proven they can keep more than one ball in the air at a time. Would love to see better justice done, especially for Bell and Alfredo. The show is already admirable for showing predatory criminality as white, and white-collar, instead of the typical criminalization of black, poor, addicted, and mentally ill people that one sees in most other crime dramas. Would love to see them go the extra mile to also give real dimension to the POC regulars besides Watson.
Update #2: Controlled Descent (Season 3 Finale) Ever since Alistair’s death I have been wondering about a hidden plot arc of someone (Irene? Holmes senior? M16?) trying to get at Sherlock via his addiction history. Pretty sure this ep is that arc surfacing again. Like Hill Street Blues, this series is all about ongoing narrative threads playing hide and seek among the weekly mysteries. The whole series can be viewed as a deductive puzzle for the viewer to solve, and I imagine it is intentionally constructed that way. Now we have to wait until Fall for the next shoe to drop …
