The Following Season 3

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

Golden Globe winner and Emmy® nominee Kevin Bacon (Ryan Hardy) stars with James Purefoy in this edge-of-your-seat thriller from Executive producer Kevin Williamson that follows a deadly cat-and-mouse pursuit between a former FBI agent and Purefoy, a diabolical serial killer. Hardy’s conviction to forge a new life will be put to the test in an intense third season when a new villain emerges.

++WARNING++ This will contain spoilers from the prior seasons, but no major giveaways from season 3. If you have not seen the prior seasons proceed with caution.

The third season is really about the ramifications of the events of season 2. It follows up months later with Joe in jail on death row , Mark on the run, and Dr. Strauss awaiting trial for kidnapping and attempted murder. Ryan is at a relatively stable time in his life, Max and Mike’s relationship has become rather unstable and a new threat in the form of other Dr Strauss’s acolytes pops up. The writers had a lot to tackle and put into a relatively few amount of episodes and for the most part did very well. Thankfully they gave up on having as much of the “is this person bad or good” that was an every week thing practically in season 1, and even to some extent in season 2. Yes there is some of that in this season, but it has toned way down.

You will still definitely have to suspend your disbelief about things that happen to advance the story on the show that would, if you know anything about the legal system, never happen in real life. For the first part of the season the main bad guys were Mark Gray and Dr. Strauss who was orchestrating a lot from prison. In the latter part of the season it was Theo Noble, another one of Dr Strauss’s acolytes who was forced into the open. Michael Ealy did a great job with the character and the multiple personas he had to play. Unfortunately because the Joe Carroll story line had played itself out, James Purefoy was basically relegated to a recurring character status. I think there would have been ways for him to be able to do more, but that was not to be.

The season ends up being incomplete because the show was cancelled after the season had been shot. The show was clearly setting up for a 4th season, and in the extras the show runners were clearly anticipating a 4th season, so season 3 ends on a cliff hanger of sorts and sets things in a new direction that will never come to fruition. That is the biggest disappointment of the season.

For those who do get the discs, for extras there are deleted scenes for many, but not all of the episodes, a gag reel, a few behind the scenes features, the NY comic-con panel with one of the producers, Kevin Bacon and Shawn Ashmore, and a couple funny or die skits, including one with Kevin Bacon’s wife that is pretty funny. Not tons of material, but good for what is there. If you get the blu ray discs, only the blu rays or included so you do not have to pay for DVDs too. The blu rays do not play in season mode though so if you stop in the middle of an episode you have to find your spot after going through the whole start up again. It is a minor point, but definitely a pain since it can easily be added in as a feature.

Very gory and dark show, so if you don’t like scary and bloody movies or shows then this is not for you. Kevin Bacon is so perfect for this role and his work is excellent. It is suspenseful and will leave you feeling “creepy crawly”. I have to admit that the content is disturbing, sometimes uncomfortably disturbing so I usually like to follow up with something cheery and happy after watching this just to take the edge off the darkness. It is very suspenseful and has lots of surprises, just when you think a scene will be safe or calm your mind is totally blown and something INSANE happens. I recommend this show if you like suspense, crazy sadistic gore and psychological thrillers. If you like Kevin Bacon, then this is a must watch- starting of course with season one.

Bad News Everyone. I wont do a entire review here. The show has been canceled. Yet another great show, with really great potential, and they Yanked it. And the problem is, if there is a cliff hanger, there will be no season 4 to help with that. The contract for Bacon was 6 years, so they will be paying him. But it does not help us. I actually felt the writing was good, and getting better. They were not asking the fans to take such huge leap of faiths on so many things, and they even found a way for Joe Carrol (the character) to keep coming back. In addition to the the new story line which was getting darker. I cant speak for everyone, but I really enjoyed this third season, with the last episode still to come next week. They said the ratings had dropped, and I always tell people, watch the ratings, because no matter how much we love our shows, if they are even down a little bit for a season and god forbid two? Even by a little bit, they don’t take a chance anymore, they just yank it. Cheers and Seinfeld are two great examples of shows that were almost last in their first year, and Seinfeld did not really break out until cheers went off the air and it took it’s prime time slot. When Keven Bacon did this series, and signed up for TV I knew this was a huge risk as he is a First Rate A list actor in Film. I never understood this, other then I knew he and his wife lost their money in that huge scandal. I think it is a shame. At almost 6 million viewers, there was still time to go up. You never know when just a new theme, one addition to the cast, or anything that is added later on that the ratings can easily take a huge jump. I think this is a shame. This is also why I don’t usually start a series. I wait until I know it’s going to be on beyond three years. So enjoy the last season if your a fan, and if you new to the show, I still think you will have a lot of fun watching this intense show centered around Bacon as an FBI agent. And I don’t know anyone who did not love the character of Joe Carrol. The serial Killer who everyone tuned in to watch. Three and done. What a shame.
