12 Monkeys Season 1

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

If you loved the “12 Monkeys” movie and/or time travel theories, you will really enjoy this show. HOWEVER, just like the movie, you need to pay attention – this isn’t a show you can just play for background noise and expect to catch everything the first time you watch it. This is deliciously detailed and very complex; I loved the movie and fell in love with this show, and I am normally not a fan when that happens. The show used the same main characters and main plot as the movie, but expounds on it a LOT which gives an amazing backstory to the 12 monkeys storyline, all while remaining loyal to the original movie without destroying anything from it. Just keep in mind: this is not a ‘mindless’ show – you will be engaged and using your thinker, which always tells me is a good show.

The 90’s movie is one of my all-time favorites so I was hopeful for this series. Is the series as good as the movie? I guess that depends on what you liked about the original movie, but for me the answer is YES. This is a reboot of the original movie about Cole traveling back in time to gather information and save the world from a deadly pandemic. Beyond that basic idea, the series is pretty different from the movie. Because it is a series they have a lot more time and opportunity to explore the same issues that Cole experienced in the original. One thing that is noticeably different is that Cole is not crazy or full of self-doubt like he is in the movie. It doesn’t have the same level of suspense and urgency that the movie version did. It is well acted and most episodes are well directed and move along nicely.

I have ordered season 2 and look forward to more of Cole’s adventures.

I am surprised that I’m not upset that the show doesn’t follow the movie. I tend to be a stickler for when a show strays from original movies and movie stray from books, but this show is great. Early on I thought this was going to be a current version of the movie, but then it goes rouge. Just when I think is going completely rogue, they go back to a reference from the movie. Keep an open mind and let the show take you on a pandemic/time travel joyride. And then there is the cast. The leads are great (a ballerina and Pyro? Who would have thunk it.) and every once in a while there is a secret surprise in the supporting cast. I love it when I find one of the 101st Airborne paratroopers (Band of Brothers) and there is another one on another current pandemic/zombie tv show. They had me at “Currahee!!”, oops…. I mean “Everyone will be dead.”

I got the fever, and the only prescription is more Monkeys.
