Scandal Season 5

As the fifth season of this political drama unfolds, Olivia (Kerry Washington) and Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) have reunited romantically, and Mellie (Bellamy Young) eventually signs Fitz’s divorce papers. However, Olivia grows increasingly uncomfortable when she’s saddled with the type of tasks that are normally assigned to a First Lady. Meanwhile, Abby (Darby Stanchfield) proves to Olivia that she’s fully capable of working in the White House, but she’s displeased with duties that make her feel like Fitz’s work wife. As the women keep taking on new roles, Mellie decides to tackle yet another one and runs for president of the United States.

Well, Gladiators, it’s been a long summer, but our favorite White Hats are finally back in action with tonight’s fifth season premiere of “Scandal.”

In the beginning of “Heavy is the Head,” Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) raises his glass in a toast to “new beginnings,” which seemed like a good goal for “Scandal.” Papa Pope is in jail, B613 is disintegrated and Olivia (Kerry Washington) has her fairy tale romance (they’re not in Vermont, but they’re making it work).

But thankfully for viewers, we’re not subjected to bright and shiny for too long, as Princess Emily of Caledonia (Hilty Bowen), in Washington for an engagement party, is killed and Queen Isabel (Dearbhla Molloy) brings in our dear Olivia in to track down leaked photos of the accident.

Shonda Rhimes doesn’t stray too far from the Princess Diana story, with shot after shot of Quinn paying off paparazzi to keep the photos hidden. Instead, Olivia arranges for photographers to snap shots of Prince Richard (Adam Fergus) identifying the body, filling a blank space on tabloid front pages across the country.
