American Gothic Season 1
DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:
This was an appealing event on several levels: convincing actors/actresses, beautiful backdrops, a compelling mystery/drama story with interesting subplots, “hooks”, interesting camera angles and set-ups. A treat to binge-watch. I was horrified and hooked by the first episode. Five stars.
And this is a genre that I am unfamiliar with; I think it might be called “dystopian” and through this series, I have come to be convinced that horror and gloom can be made compelling – even very attractive, justifiable, desirable. Here we have an on-going celebration of the all the wrong things for all the right reasons in beautiful settings and we could be subtly led to think this idea might, after all is said and done, be ok. This thought scared me because this idea is not anywhere NEAR ok. Even when it is done in satire. This is personal, yes, but no stars for this genre.
If ever there is a continuation, I cannot bear that the disfuntional madness might continue (spoiler here) with Jack and Sophie/Dara and to what levels it might descend. This, I think, is the nature of dystopia – complete and total chaos! Not for me.

I am currently hooked on this … but close to giving up. The acting is fine, but it is one of those shows where the main characters keeping making bone-headed choices, they reject the obvious course of action for reasons that are either not explained, unbelievably dumb or simply bogus; you go “what are they thinking?”. This results in a growing level of frustration that will soon reach a point at which I will pull the plug. Too bad … this could be circumvented with little more inventive thinking about the reality of the plot, it’s as if they got lazy or ran out of ideas to maintain the quality of initial episodes.
