Lebanese’s desire to become ‘King of Rome’ carries out to it’s inevitable conclusion in the Italian series semi-based on the criminal organization, Banda della Magliana.Released for the first time in the US from Kino Lorber, Romanzo Criminale follows the Maglianas as they ascend from typewriter robbers in the 70’s to controlling criminals of Rome. It was supposed to be a one-off job. Lebanese (Montanari) and Freddo (Marchioni) joined batteries to kidnap a baron for ransom money. When the ransom was paid with marked bills their alliance got extended to murder and money laundering. Then the gang got involved in the drug trade and made more mistakes, and all these bumbles collided somewhere with success.

It is based on real events. Banda della Magliana really existed and so their ties to a deviated part of the secret services. If you are interested look into wikipedia profiles of the gang like the one of Enrico de Pedis and his mysterious burial in the basilica of Santa Appolinare. You really go through a part of Italian history with the kidnapping of Moro and the killing of Giorgiana Masi. A bit of fiction and a lot of reality following the narrative steps of frederick Forsyth.- Tommaso

An entertaining show so far. But…. the sizable delay of the subtitles is EXTREMELY DISTRACTING. The lag definitely takes a lot of effort to read and then figure out what translation corresponds to which line of dialogue from which character. It’s a shame because it considerably takes away from just being to watch and enjoy a really good show. I would give it 5 stars otherwise. But I’m only giving it 3.- G. Recipient
