Rosemary & Thyme Complete Collection

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

I loved this series when it was shown on our local PBS station on mystery night in California. The information on gardening plus the beautiful English gardens are a lovely backdrop to the characters of two strong woman. In this episode, Rosemary and Nora (Mrs. Thyme) are planting a garden on the estate of a renown musician and composer. The musician bought the estate because his young wife loved it. A man with a backhoe is digging a hole for garden pool and discovers the bones of a horse buried under the vast lawn. A middle of the night visit by strangers in a car to the estate with shovels causes the musician, up working late, to go outside and investigate. The musician is shot. by whoever was trying to dig up more lawn. Rosemary, who is a light sleeper, heard the shot and sales up to investigate. She discovers the musician dead on the lawn. The women are drawn into investigating the murder because they liked the late musician, they like his young widow, and they hate the smarmy detective who is assigned the case.- Carol Mello

Though the premise is rather implausible, this is an enjoyable and lighthearted mystery series much in the same vein as “Death in Paradise”, early “Murder She Wrote”, or the current version of “Father Brown”. The series’ basis is formed in the opening episode where two middle aged women of diverse backgrounds meet rather by happenstance after suffering life changing events. Both being at loose ends they devise a profession for themselves as landscape architects traveling the countryside in an old Land Rover where they take on various horticultural assignments. Invariably someone dies of suspicious cause prompting Rosemary Boxer and Laura Thyme to insinuate themselves into the subsequent investigation, usually to the annoyance of the local police detectives. It’s not Shakespeare but it is fun and, all in all, pretty well done.- J. Janssen

If you love mystery stories this is a must to add to your collection. These two women are delightful. Rosemary (Boxer) meets (Laura) Thyme during a time in which each has experienced upsetting personal crises and they blend together as if they have been friends for years. The friendship is just one reason to watch this series. Although the two basically work as gardeners something always happens so that Thyme (a retired police office whose dirty bum of a husband dumps her for a younger woman AFTER she has given up her career to be a housewife) and Rosemary (whose dirty bum of a boyfriend has fired her from her job even after he has suggested they get back together) must get involved in investigations of murders which the police have bungled. I have a problem with the way they interfere with the chain of custody of key pieces of evidence BUT this is fiction. It is a bonus that the locations and sets are simply luscious with flowers and gorgeous trees and architecture of a Time Gone By. The dialogue is a bit of a challenge in that the accents of the characters who are not well educated are somewhat difficult to understand but the shows are so enjoyable that I do not mind watching them a second time just to savor the entire experience.-Margaret E.
