Professor Marston & the Wonder Women

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

Before you watch the film I highly recommend you buy the book The Secret History of Wonder Woman. It will lend a lot of depth to the film. The life of the people depicted in this film have so many layers and connections and influences to other historical figures it is impossible to do it justice in 90 minutes. Overall I thought they did an okay job although there was definitely the creation of a lot of conflict and drama that did not happened between the three. Personally I thought the real story, especially the parallel rise of the comic industry, pulp fiction and tie into the characters was so much more fascinating that what the writers chose to insert instead. It also didn’t give a true representation of the working positions of Olive and Elizabeth which was a pity. But, if you buy the book and read it then watch the movie I think you will come away with a much better experience. On its own the movie is okay but it does give short shift to all of the individual portrayed. The Secret History of Wonder Woman- M. Dudley

In “Professor Marston & the Wonder Women,” writer/director Angela Robinson brilliantly follows the lives of Wonder Woman creator William Moulton Marston (Luke Evans) and the relationship between he, his wife Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall), and Olive Byrne (Bella Heathcote). The story focuses on their lives together as well as the psychological theories they developed that informed their comics work, dramatically recounting the struggles of their unconventional relationship in a time obsessed with conformity. Robinson uses as a framing device an interview in which Marston must defend his work to Josette Frank (Connie Britton), a children’s book critic and fascistic censor. This helps add dramatic tension to the emotional weight of the trios’ relationship. Always a delight, Oliver Platt plays M.C. Gaines, the publisher of D.C. comics. Though the basics of this story are not unknown to comic historians, having been covered by Les Daniels, Jill Lepore, and Noah Berlatsky, Robinson helps bring it to a wider public and explain why Wonder Woman mattered historically and continues to play a key role in comics.- RDD

A beautiful, sensitive and intimate story about the importance of accepting yourself, while remaining aware of things you’d rather change. The story also examines the harm and consequences of rejecting ourselves even with the approval of society.- Mac from KC
