Ripper Street Season 5

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

This series just keeps getting better and better. Came with a slipcover, too. Was a bit surprised by that, as amazon has been really haphazard about shipping their product with slipcovers. Fits nicely on my shelf now together with the other seasons of this show. Engaging storyline, first rate actors, you get that creepy feeling of old skool London when watching this show. The Ripper lives! Would also recommend taking one of the numerous guided tours about the Ripper when in London. Always fresh perspectives and new theories.- Emperor Diocletian

This has been a pretty brutal series. It was much like cops I,II. Every scene made the viewer feel like they were there crawling around in the filth of the then existing life of the inner city slums of the late nineteenth England, in this case white chapel. The fifth and final season was a much disappointment. It seems to be the case with these long running series. The writers and producers can’t figure how to end them. I was hoping Reid would find peace with himself but he didn’t. His punishment for murder was to remain in white chapel as inspector of the police force like a purgatory of sorts. There were many flash backs involving inspector Drake which didn’t make much sense why not just keep him in the series instead of killing him off. The two brothers finally get their just deserts as well as captain Jack’s wife. Captain Jack gets his son but at a costly price. Some loose ends weren’t taken care of like Drake’s wife, and the different women involved in Reid’s life. This is typical of British crime series. They involve so many different characters that loose ends abound. Reid’s daughter marries and has a child but not in white chapel and Reid does not see his grand daughter in person and the viewer is led to believe that he never will. I found the most amazing thing of the entire series was the way each character structures their sentences as they spoke. Apparently that was the way people talked back then but it must have been hard to write a script with such conversation structures. I guess the theme of the entire series is that white chapel wins. The only way to escape it’s damaging effects is to leave if one can.
