Poldark Season 5
DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:
Fans of Winston Graham’s Poldark books will know that the TV adaptation faces a considerable hurdle: series four of the show took us to the end of the seventh novel. The eighth novel jumps forward a decade and finds Ross Poldark, erstwhile Cornish mine owner, transformed in to a government spy working in Portugal. How would writer Debbie Horsfield transport viewers over that giant narrative canyon?
Horsfield’s solution has been largely to ignore the books and go her own way – the new series is not based on any novel, instead beginning straight after the last one in 1800 with Ross still a mine-owner and frustrated politician. Going “off book” has allowed Horsfield to pick stories and characters…

For five years now the breathless romance and swashbuckling silliness of Poldark (BBC One) has swept us up in its hirsute arms and carried us, hearts aflutter, through the summer drama doldrums. So while the series’ return last night was a cause for much joy, it was also tinged by the temptation to rend one’s garments in grief that this will be – sob! – the final series.
As ever, Debbie Horsfield’s superb script plunged us instantly into a world of tricorne hats, swoonsome Cornish coastlines and strangely heightened emotions, reminding us first of the hearts wrenched last time round (particularly due to the death of paramour-to-all Elizabeth), before whisking us back in time to 1781 and a scene…
