Gotham Season 5
DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:
Like the dutiful detective-turned-commissioner leading the cast, “Gotham” did exactly what it needed to do — in the series finale and final season overall. Charged with setting up the era of Batman (without ever saying his name), Fox’s crime drama took a bit of glee going through the motions, and even if the wild minds behind it couldn’t go full-tilt crazy in its waning hours, they did ensure a respectable legacy for an overtly beautiful and sneakily ambitious broadcast drama.
“The Beginnings…” — an apt finale title for a series always steaming toward its Bat-predecessors’ timelines — checked off box after box: The 10-year time jump sets up a return for Gotham’s favorite son, Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz), who’s been overseas becoming the hero the city needs. Before his new Wayne Tower can open, a devious plot to blow it up emerges courtesy of a mysterious new villain. Of course, given Jeremiah Valeska’s early appearance in the episode (played by Cameron Monaghan), as well as the long-awaited unveiling of “Gotham’s” very own Joker, it’s pretty obvious who said villain might be.

As Gotham‘s end began this Thursday, the Fox drama efficiently gave us the lay of the No Man’s Land, before delving into decidedly deadly dealings between Penguin and those who dare challenge him.
Following a teasey flash-forward that showed Penguin and Nygma allied with Jim and the GCPD in a massive gunfight with a mutual enemy (the government?), the premiere picked up 87 days after Jeremiah Valeska blew up Gotham’s connections to the outside world. It was explained that Penguin lords over the manufacture of munitions, while Barbara and the Sirens hold the keys to the city’s proverbial kitchen. The GCPD has turned into a refugee camp of sorts, doing what it can to feed and protect those left to fend for themselves by the fighting factions — though provisions are now running low, with barely two weeks of quarter-rations left.

Gotham returned from its hiatus last week, and delivered yet another impressive instalment in what is quickly shaping up to be the series’ best season. In spite of the strength of the Fox drama’s final outing, however, nothing could’ve prepared us for Ace Chemicals.
Picking up from where 13 Stitches left off, Ace Chemicals sees the villainous Jeremiah Valeska enact his psychotic plan to destroy Bruce Wayne by having him witness a reenactment of his parents’ deaths – a plan that leads to some physical conflict between the two opposing forces, as they face-off in the iconic eponymous building.
Despite the strong focus on the aforementioned narrative, these characters aren’t the only ones to feature, as all of the series’ mainstays pop up in some capacity. In fact, two separate storylines – one featuring Lee and Gordon, and the other centring on Selina and Oswald – run nicely alongside Jeremiah’s vengeance, creating some appreciated levity from the heart-racing action.
Save for one minor caveat, Ace Chemicals is Gotham’s greatest instalment – not only of this season, but of all time.
