Based on the book by Peter Dickinson (with additional material), the story is thus: the ancient world is in a crisis. The age of magic is ending, and man is on the verge of the age of science. However, since man needs magic to inspire his work, the four most powerful wizards in the world plan to create a hidden sanctuary for all magical beings. But one, the wicked Red Wizard (played by a then-unknown James Earl Jones), will not go quietly into the night, but plans to pervert science as a weapon of war, and enslave mankind as his army. Since the other wizards can’t allow this, a quest is called for to retrieve the source of his power: the Red Crown of Ohmydin. Two dragons and a valiant knight answer the call, but one more is needed. This comes in the form of Peter, a 20th Century chemist and, as it turns out, an ardent fantasy buff. This, therefore, gives him a foothold in both worlds. After being transported to mythic times, a freak accident implants his mind in the body of a dragon. And so, the journey begins…-Stephen Hoffman

Quite possibly, this animated movie is one of the most underrated children’s classics. Sure, as you’ve probably heard, it’s a hodge podge of ideas culled from “The Dragon and the George” and Peter Dickinson’s titular book. But it does it so well it puts some of the more modern animated movies to shame.There’s enough fantasy elements, action, comedy and even romance to keep three movies going. Having watched this hundreds of times on VHS as a child, and now rewatching it with my own children, it has not lost its charm one bit. Don McLean’s music brings back many fond memories of that magical time called childhood which we so often forget in our busy tech-laden lives.- docnyt
