Phantom Thread

Phantom Thread chronicles a battle of wills between Reynolds and Alma, a battle for dominance, affection and the art of fashion. Alma has to defer to Reynolds in all things but has her rebellion where the solution, ironically, is to make Reynolds dependent of her through poisonous mushrooms. Phantom Thread has been termed a Gothic Romance, and that nicely encapsulates the story. Reynolds’s sister Cyril beautifully plays off of both of them, so while this is not a love triangle Cyril has her own influence over Alma and Reynolds. Daniel Day-Lewis’s performance is one of perfection. There is no actor that I know of who so completely becomes the character he is playing. It is a great pleasure to see him at work.- David Wend

Whoa. This is one crazy movie. It is all about a very dysfunctional marriage. Spoiler Alert – He is a famous dress maker and she is a waitress. He asks her out on a date which is very weird. After dinner they go back to his place and he asks her to try on dresses. She is having fun until his sister/partner arrives. He now takes her measurements and his sister then smells her. Gets weirder. She then goes to live with them. He is an arrogant a–h— and is mean to everyone. He must have everything his way, NOW and always. She finally gets tired of being mistreated and poisons him with some poisonous mushrooms. She pampers him till he gets better and then he proposes. They then get married. OK, gets weirder. After some more disagreements, she then tells him she wants to make him sick again so he is again totally dependent on her. He will then get better again and they will continue to love each other. He agrees to this. Sound a little sick? So she cooks him an omelette with some more poisonous mushrooms. He watches her cook and then she watches him eat. This is a very strange scene. Next scene he is sitting in the bathroom puking in a basin, but is happy. She asks if she should call the doctor. He says no and states he only wants her to take care of him. She dreams about their future together. Couldn’t get any sicker than their present.- lorraine black

Easily the best film of the year, another masterpiece from PTA, a genius. The negative reviews show people clearly did not comprehend this film. Its not about ghosts lol, and it’s not about fashion or clothing design either. It’s about how complex, difficult, and passionate people form a relationship, while also collaborating in art. The film is really a RomCom – except that it doesn’t present the lovers as air-headed milquetoast zombies that are expect to forgo individuality for the sake of hooking up, which is what most lame romcoms present. This romcom has nuance and depth. There is nothing easy about these human beings. They are passionate and that passion drives them to achieve a greater good (in this case, the dresses which are designed to make ugly women beautiful, in their own minds), even if that creates a perception that they are obnoxiously fussy, or even lunatics. The couple presented in the story (DD Lewis and Vicky Krieps) are titanic personalities, and do battle in order to truly explore each other’s heart & soul. Yes their idiosyncrasies and conflicts may seem a little exaggerated from reality, but the film depicts humans, and especially artists, as individuals with strong personalities that they are not so quick to surrender or supress, as opposed to depictions in many typical Hollywood romances. Maybe people shouldn’t compromise themselves just for the sake of love and relationships – the film proposes that they should challenge each other, always pushing the envelope.
