This movie was about what I thought it was going to be. I can see why some people may not have liked it. The plot and ending is very confusing and doesn’t really answer a lot of questions. Plus the whole movie is disorienting. It feels like you’re watching a movie after a stroke. You feel mentally lost along with the characters. It’s a really odd feeling. It also doesn’t help that the whole movie is like Event Horizon but with LSD instead of space-demons.Without spoiling anything, if you enjoy eerie movies, movies that are so unnatural that they give you goosebumps, or movies that are heavy on cosmic horror/Lovecraftian themes, then you’ll love this movie. It may not be everyone’s favorite, but if you like the unknown and other-planar type mystery, then you’ll enjoy the movie.-Matthew R
Excellent, thought driven Sci-Fi that plays like a disturbing but not entirely unpleasant dream. Alex Garland who adapted and directed this movie is quickly becoming one of my favorites. There is a Kubrickian leanness to this story of a biologist who volunteers to go into zone under the influence of an alien to get answers on what happened to her husband. I’ve never read the source material but I read the synopsis of it and it seems that Garland did a great job of emphasizing what was important in the book. It really does feel dreamlike. The directing is beautiful but unobtrusive. Garland has a very light hand for a auteur. He’s a very talented and thoughtful writer and this is only his second movie, his first being the equally excellent and thoughtful ‘Ex Machina’. Natalie Portman is great and shows some action hero chops. The rest of cast is excellent as well. This is more a movie about questions than answers though the ending is very satisfying. There is nothing cookie cutter about this. This is great cinema that fans of thought and story driven movie making will love!- JB Steel
Remarkable adaptation to the Jeff Vandermeer Southern Reach trilogy. The essence of that fascinating weird world is in here, and I enjoyed the experience of seeing that world come alive on the screen. There’s the sense of dread, the impossible task of fighting something that is utterly alien to us earthlings and also the gore presented in the novels. Great casting, photography and directing. I highly recommend this movie for fans of science fiction.-D. D. Leon
