Absolutely Fabulous [Blu-ray]
DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:
Very good movie with the AbFab cast. If you love the show you will love this movie. It kind of felt like there were some familiar jokes from past episodes but with a current upgrade. There are a lot of celebrity cameos. Mostly from Europe though. There are some slow spots in the film and I was wondering why Saunders didn’t take advantage of the “R” rating but there are a lot of laughs in between. Edina still has her PR firm but it is running out of money. Edina hoped to get money from a book deal that she wishes that would turn into a movie. But, the book got turned down due to lazy writing. Then, Edina accidentally pushes Kate Moss into the Thames at a show which causes the police to think that she murdered her. So, Edina and Patsy go to France to evade being arrested and also to find Patsy a rich husband. The movie has a cool twist toward the end. I thought the movie could’ve been a little bit more funny but the movie has a lot of heart and it is wonderful seeing the cast. Jennifer Saunders said that she would be willing to write and do another movie if this one turned out successful. I think the movie made its money back with some profit. Depending on the rental and sales of the home video formats, only time can tell if we will see them again. I pray we do!- DK
My husbands’ take: “This film is more of a walk down memory lane than it is a comedy. There really aren’t any great jokes to be found. Bo and Marshall have a running anti-trans theme that’s not good at all. The cut scenes involving that are even worse but the ones left in aren’t good either. There is a painfully amateurish scene involving Saffron and the “gay community” that also shows that Saunders doesn’t write gay themes well. That had always been true but the writing on that subject was a bit better in the 90s series, like the “All my friends are gay” joke and the bit where she is disappointed Saffron isn’t gay. The actor from Glee doesn’t fit well into the context of the film; the same goes for the teenager daughter of Saffron, although she is preferable to the Glee actor. There is a lot of rehashing of old material and a lot of cameos. The film feels like it’s someone talking about the show rather than being in it. The most interesting part is Patsy with her “love interest” but that is given short shrift because Saunders tries, and fails, to make Edina the central character. Lumley still sparkles but the material she is given is fairly threadbare. Still, the material she was given and what she did with it was head and shoulders above Saunders’ showing in this film. The oddest aspect of the film is that Bubble, a peripheral character, has the best joke (when she leaves the water). The other highlight is Claudia Bing’s stalking of Saunders at the awards ceremony, a scene that dissolves in Saunders’ bad writing, unfortunately. The only characters who are given strength are Bubble and Patsy. The writing does its best to marginalize everyone else, nearly to the point of oblivion. This is what she did to the Bettina character previously as well. The scene where an obese woman hectors Edina for being fat is a good example of why this film’s writing is generally so poor-quality. Perhaps this is supposed to be irony but it’s not funny.”-meyersde
Ignore the critics, the ones who panned it when it came out, they clearly did not ever see the original series. If you liked AbFab, you will love it! Let’s face it abfab was the first show to make light of substance abuse and drugs, without it we probably would’ve never have had shameless in the UK or US, or Weeds or even Breaking Bad. The show was as trendsetting as the lead characters.-DanInPhilly
