Alice: The Complete First Season 1

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

Alice Spivak Hyatt (Lavin) is an unemployed widow after her husband, Donald, is killed in a trucking accident, and with her young son Tommy (played by Alfred Lutter in the pilot episode, reprising his role from the film, but played by Philip McKeon thereafter) heads from their New Jersey home to Los Angeles so that she can pursue a singing career. Her car breaks down on the way in Phoenix (from a presumed engine fire, as seen in the opening credits), and we meet her soon after she has taken a job as a waitress at Mel’s Diner, on the outskirts of Phoenix. (The later seasons’ exterior shots were of a real diner, named Mel’s, still in operation in Phoenix.) Alice works alongside Mel Sharples (Vic Tayback), the grouchy, stingy owner and cook of the greasy spoon, and fellow waitresses and friends, sassy, man-hungry Florence Jean “Flo” Castleberry (Polly Holliday), and neurotic, scatterbrained Vera Louise Gorman (Beth Howland)…

Okay. I wanted to relive my growing up years and watched this show. It wasn’t what I remembered exactly. I tried to remember back then when rating it as to what it is. I don’t want to compare it on today’s tv style because then it would be poor. But when it was made it had a lot of topics that were considered “taboo” back then and they were positive on delivery of these topics.- Bobby P.

I just love the older sitcoms. Alice was always one of my favorites, mostly due to Flo, who I found to be as much fun as Bea Arthur. The regular cast members worked so well together, I was surprised to learn there was some ‘under the radar’ professional jealousy between the female cast members. In season one, the scripts started out strong, but as the season progressed, they became strained and silly. When Mel decided to advertise, and Alice ended up dressed like a piece of fruit, the script seemed forced and the actors uncomfortable and unfunny. All in all tho, it was still fun to watch. I just loved Flo’s character, and it wasn’t the same when she left.- Outstander
