Animal Kingdom Season 2

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

Ever since episode 5 where things really got going, I actually look forward to Wed. Mornings b/c of this show. I am someone who is very bored with action movies/violence, but the “jobs” on this show have me putting down my hand held device and riveted to the screen. I am never sure how they’re going to pull off what seems impossible, and am actually surprised where the plots lead. And then I can’t wait for next week. As a bonus, I like how the writers are skillfully revealing back story on the fascinating, but horrible characters. I’ve never been a fan of Barkin, but this role was made for her, no offense to Weaver who was great; I think the series and the movie can both stand on their own.

“Smurf” is great at being so perfect at being ruthless, and just getting things done no matter what. And that is fascinating and satisfying to watch somehow. I would like to see more of this and much less of the spoiled, sulky, vindictive plotting of the “uncles,” the perpetually morally outraged career criminals and murderers, which just makes the show seem soapy. (It reminds me of the tiresome and hypocritical moral outrage of the mass murderers of Boardwalk Empire toward Gilian. I have never understood immoral people expecting moral behavior from others.).

All of which brings me to a related point: with the exception of the orphaned underage grandson, who has no other real options because of social services’ manipulative ineptness, none of these are good or innocent people in any way, despite their self righteousness. But it’s exciting to watch people live in ways you would never want to, nor should you. Moreover, I get that the “uncles” are infantilized and that is the sick glue that holds this crime family together and drives them, but unlike the movie, the series seems to be reducing things to some sort of Oedipal Complex, while I think the movie was about so much more. Anyhow the series is not over yet.

Exciting show and Ellen Barkin is phenomenal in this role, I have always gotten an Angie Dickinson vibe from her which i love. The detectives are more annoying, something that differs from the movie. I found myself rooting for the detective in the movie but the family in the tv show, but that pretty much has to happen if they want to keep going with this show.

I’m really enjoying the horrible family life portrayed in Animal Kingdom. The cast does a great job of presenting a corrupt group of people yet constantly has me hoping they won’t be caught as you see the humanity in each of them at times. Maybe the exception being the Mother, portrayed excellently by Ellen Barkin. I really don’t see any redeeming qualities in her, she is a lying manipulator who uses her children against each other to control them and get what she wants. She has no qualms about having people killed, even her son’s wife, and uses another very disturbed son to accomplish this.
