In a small mining town, an orphaned teenage boy named Pazu finds and catches a teenage girl floating from the sky named Sheeta. When she awakens the next day she tells him that she is being chased by pirates and the government who are after her crystal necklace that is connected to the floating city of Laputa. It’s now up to our two protagonists to find the city before the Government and pirates can find them and unlock the secret of Laputa and Sheeta’s connection to the floating city.—Mark Casadevall

This film is set in a Victorian era that might have been, influenced by the visions of writers such as Jules Verne. As Pazu, the apprentice of the engineer who maintains a mine’s elevator machinery, carries his boss’s dinner back to the mine, an unconscious pigtailed girl floats down from the sky into his arms. This girl, Sheeta, and her magical levitation-stone pendant hold the key to a mysterious, mythical sky-castle known as Laputa. Sheeta and Pazu must flee from both air-pirates, who seek the sky kingdom for its legendary treasure, and the army, led by a government agent with his own mysterious agenda for Laputa.-Christopher E. Meadows

The best action-oriented Miyazaki film and the first to be produced under the legendary Studio Ghibli. The animation is incredibly-detailed and the action is some of the most exhilarating ever put into an animated feature. The steampunk world the character’s occupy is incredibly imaginative and fascinating. Combined with a great story along with fun characters, and this delightful treat for all ages is easily one of Miyazaki’s best efforts.-Christopher Heim
