CSI: Cyber the finale

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

The phenomenon that launched the procedural drama. From the heart wrenching truths behind murders within families (Blood Drops and Gentle, Gentle) to the macabre (Justice Is Served) to crimes that seem to only happen is Las Vegas (Table Stakes and To Halve and to Hold) CSI: Crime Scene Investigation proves in its inaugural season that it will be a force to be reckoned with for many years to come.

In the past week, CSI: Cyber was canceled ending years of CSI shows on CBS. After watching the 2nd Season finale, they were essentially ending the show sending characters in different directions. While Bones did something similar in its last season, I was not surprise there would not be a third season. I like to embrace technology & this show showed people how all this new technology can hurt us or be used to hurt us. That is sort of scary.
When CSI ended, for no real reason other than to give Ted Danson a steady job for a year, his character of DB Russell was brought into the FBI cyber crime unit without any real thoughts as to what do with his character. It was no shock that Russell left the unit and that Danson is now on to his next TV gig. The cast of CSI Cyber has been very good & nice to look at. The character of Brody Nelson never found out what happened to the money he was accused of stealing & magically with a criminal record became an FBI agent. Hayley Kyoko showed off her naturally dark brown hair in a flashback which made her look way better than the dyed blonde look. The stalker story line through much of the season was pointless except to get DB Russell shot because of it. The only bright point to the season was actor Marcus Giamatti who generally seemed ecstatic about being part of helping. The episodes were well written, but in the end, it seemed like the producers and cast knew there was nothing left for them to do. This show had so much potential. It is now a memory

Sadly this series has been cancelled. But my husband and I love it! OK, it’s not all that realistic and the show has been heavily criticized by the tech industry. But it’s TV! No one ever said TV shows are realistic! Any lawyer, doctor or cop who’s watched one of their professions’ television dramas can tell you that there’s nothing realistic about any of them! It’s entertainment…and from that standpoint this show delivers.

What I do like about the show’s portrayal of tech related topics, especially security ones, is that the show makes people aware of the many hacking dangers that are lurking out there. There are plenty of them and most people error on the side of not taking enough of the right measures to keep their identities and their data safe.

What I like about the other aspects of the show are the way they begin, after the first few episodes to develope each of the character’s backgrounds and history’s. You become so much more connected to them as you learn about their past lives. I feel like this development wasn’t completely finished prior to the show’s cancellation…and had it been renewed I think the 3rd season would have completed that cycle and brought the team to a similar comfortable place like that the original NCSI show enjoys.

One important area I think the show should be commended for is making people aware of how IoT (Internet of Things) devices can significantly increase your chances of being hacked. IoT devices open up people’s households and networks to so many more threats…real threats that people should be aware of. I love all aspects of IoT and Smart Home technology…especially smart TV’s, Amazon Echo and things like WiFi controllable lights and thermostats. Even inhome web camera technology for security is easy enough for lay people to implement these days. But adding these kinds of devices means that you need to take very good measures to protect your network…and that’s where I think this show serves a really useful purpose. Yes, many of the hacking scenarios are way over-simplified and not really realistic, but at their core many of them actually are realistic. This show gets people thinking about the topic of making their devices and homes more secure! And it’s done that in a very entertaining manner!
