Doctor Strange [Blu-ray]
DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:
For someone who literally never looked at a Marvel comic book, I’ve been thoroughly sucked into that world by the movies. Though obviously the creators’ first love is the comics, I think they’re aware that many in the audience don’t know the backstory of all these characters, and the movies are thorough enough that the background knowledge isn’t vital. I really enjoy the movies, and the actors, who seem never to make a misstep. I found Benedict Cumberbatch perhaps an unlikely superhero, but quite convincing. As usual, there’s a fair amount of humor, and great special effects.- Cynthia
This is a fun Marvel movie. I read the comic books in the 1960s and I like this adaptation. Benedict Cumberbatch is superb as Doctor Strange. Strange was a brilliant but cocky neurosurgeon with a huge ego. He is injured in a car accident and his hands are mangled. He ends up in Nepal desperate for a cure which will allow him to resume his surgical career. There, he meets the Ancient One, played by Tilda Swinton, who is a guru/sorcerer. Strange becomes a sort of monk/follower and learns to move between dimensions. Like Tony Stark, Strange discovers humility and develops special powers which allow him to manipulate time and matter. While being taught by the Ancient One, he decides to use his abilities for the greater good. This is an entertaining movie with an excellent cast. It also makes a refreshing change of subject matter for superhero movies. The special effects are spectacular.- David Lindsay
So, we got the Marvel Universe in film and then we got the Marvel Cosmic Universe in film. It was finally time to introduce fans old and new to the other Marvel world…the Marvel Magic Universe. Once again the best way to do it…make a movie about a not so popular Marvel character. Now I always knew about Doctor Strange but, I never read any of the comic books so of course knowing that he was going to be the next hero introduced into the MCU I was curious. Once again…not a ground breaking film but, a fun and entertaining look at a brand new cinematic super-hero. Benedict Cumberbatch definitely did a great job as Doctor Strange, he was intellectual, pompous, arrogant and curious. The journey through this film is unlike any of the previous Marvel characters along with a very different origin story. The reveal of the Marvel Magic Universe in this film only scratches the surface of what is actually out there but, the film definitely makes you eager for more. There is a great supporting cast including Rachel McAdams, Matts Mickelson and Tilda Swinton. However the highlight for me is definitely Benedict Wong as Wong, who is going to show up with a much bigger role in future Marvel films. This film also furthers the story of the Infinity Stones and seeing the power that the new one possesses only made me more excited for Avengers: Infinity War. The issues I had was the fact that the villains once again like in most MCU films were very underdeveloped and weak. Especially knowing how powerful a magical entity like Dorumamu is to be resorted to an overused lame joke is horrible.Either way, this is a good watch, it is amazing to look at and a very curious chapter in the MCU.- Underground Reborn
