Justified Season 4

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

First off, this thing wasn’t filmed in Harlan County. My mom and dad are natives of Harlan, I’ve been there and seen it multiple times. It’s a lot greener, steeper, and not nearly as flat. The town references and locations are however pretty spot on; the opening photo of Harlan is Harlan. Mom and Dad both attended Evarts high school, but I’m not sure it looked like the scenes in Season 4, Ep 11. In my infrequent visits to Harlan I didn’t realized it was such a hot bed of crime. Folks I met there are friendly for the most part and law abiding (except for the moonshine business). Unfortunately, oxycontin and heroin are a serious problem there so there is a real life Boyd Crowder (or copies of him) feeding the need. It seems to be a spreading plague all over the country. Coal mining is still a business in the area and I have a brother in law who still mines coal daily as did nearly all my relatives. Thank God dad joined the Air Force and left; I’d probably be mining coal today.

Raylan frequently drives from Lexington to Harlan for most of this series. The trip from Lexington to Harlan is almost 4 hours one way. Lots of windshield time and plenty of time to listen to books on cd. Entirely too much killing for my tastes, but I can’t look away. Sort of like passing an accident on the highway; you’re curious in a guilty sort of way.

I have watched seasons 1-5 and have loved every single episode. There is not a boring moment in this series. Timothy Olyphant plays his part of Deputy Marshal Raylan Given so perfectly that you forget he’s acting. He’s also one of the best pieces of eye candy ever created. Boyd Crowder isn’t your typical bad guy, though he is beyond bad. I love every part he’s in and never want anything to happen to him. His eloquence and way of handling every situation he’s in makes him my favorite bad guy of all time. I am so sad knowing I only have one season left to watch. I would watch the whole series all over again. I love this series. I can’t say enough good things about it. It is a must see, in my opinion. Hats off and guns down to everyone involved in the creation and execution of this edge of your seat show.

While the Raylan Givens character makes the Justified world go round, I have to comment on Boyd Crowder. This has been a brilliantly played role from the beginning. As the childhood friend and shadow to Givens, Crowder absolutely holds his own and then some. The second son of a local criminal Boss, he is riveting. The episodes in which the born-again Crowder loses his faith were some of the best TV ever. Crowder has courage and, yes, decency, that plays off Givens role brilliantly. Now, firmly ensconced as the local criminal boss, when Crowder tells the rich criminal elite in his neighborhood that their lives might make them criminals, it doesn’t make them outlaws–Crowder is the Outlaw–he takes his place alongside Clyde Barrow, Bonnie Parker, and the Sundance Kid as one of the best, most fascinating, most well written outlaw characters in movie/TV history.
