Justified Season 5

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

This season, Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) confronts the Crowes, a deadly, lawless family from Florida intent on settling in Harlan with new criminal enterprises in mind. Meanwhile, Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins) struggles to free his imprisoned fiancée Ava (Joelle Carter) as he partners with the Dixie Mafia’s Wynn Duffy (Jere Burns).

This is one of my favorite series. Superbly acted on all sides, well paced and highly believable. Walton Goggins is terrific as Boyd Crowder, the arch criminal who is as smart as they come, and Timothy Olyphant is loveable as the down-home U.S. Marshall who plays by his own rules, to the annoyance of everyone else, but most of the time he’s right on the mark. Sarcastic to a fault, and as perceptive as we all wish we could be, Olyphant sees through to the truth that evades everyone else, save Goggins. Twists and turns abound, and what you expect to happen rarely does, thanks to some brilliant writing and cinematography. The denizens of criminals run the gambit of notorious and infamous low-bred malcontents and losers, both brilliant and unbelievably dull-witted. Nick Searcy plays his role to perfection as Art Mullens, and you can’t help but see things through his eyes. Joelle Carter is a study in frustration, always being complimented on her looks, but clearly she is much more than a pretty face…she is only relegated to that position by the men who love or have loved her. We see some of the difficulties women face by this male-dominated series. People continue to underestimate her as Ava Crowder. Season five introduces Sam Elliot as Avery Markham, the penultimate villain with a wry smile, sonorous voice and calculating eyes that see through nearly every situation. He is introduced vis-a-vis Mary Steenburgen, who plays Markhum’s lover cum fiancé. There really is something for everyone in this series.

This is a fantastic show! From the first 5 minutes of Season 1 Episode 1 all the way to the finish line. Timothy Olyphant is like a mix of Clint Eastwood’s “Dirty Harry” combined with his eyes squinting, hat wearing, quick draw gun slinging man with no name spaghetti westerns like “The Good, The Bad & The Ugly”. He deals his own brand of justice and I couldn’t agree more!
The character interaction is also phenomenal as he and his boss ” Art” have a great relationship with lots of fun and serious moments. Mr. Oliphant’s character, “Raylan Givens”, is very complex but also a man of few words. He is conflicted by his upbringing as his father was not the best role model and his friend from years ago is now on the wrong side of the law. Ultimately his actions show that he is a man of honor and someone who keeps his promises.

I hope to see Mr. Olyphant in similar roles or even bring back Justified or a Western series or movie.

Thank you for such an excellent series!

It seems unlikely that the late Elmore Leonard would have ever envisioned how his short story, “Fire in the Hole” would morph into the FX juggernaut that “Justified” has become. I was concerned reading some of the Amazon reviews prior to this season’s DVD release that the show had lost its way. The suggestion was now that Elmore was no longer around to guide the writing process the scripts were suffering. Having just finished Season 5 I’m happy to say that the franchise is still strong. The season seemed a bit more violent than previously, but that’s a fine distinction on a show like this and I didn’t actually do a body count. The dysfunctional and malevolent Crowe family served as a worthy nemesis for Timothy Olyphant’s Deputy Marshal Raylan Givens to cross swords with. Alicia Witt who I have not seen since she starred as Cybil Shepherd’s daughter on her early 90’s sitcom does a nice turn as the only female of the Crowe clan and provides a counterpoint to all the testosterone. Uncharacteristically Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins is superb as usual) struggles throughout this story arc trying to become the local heroin kingpin while also attempting get Eva sprung from prison without success. If anything brought this season down in terms of quality it was the Eva behind bars story- every time we had to visit her in jail was a drag to the episode. The writer’s use every prison movie cliché you have ever seen and by the last episode you’ll be ready to bake her a cake with a file in it just to end the monotony. I also missed the comic relief from Season 4’s Constable Bob character, so ably played by Patton Oswald, and hope we might see him again in the Season 6 conclusion to this great series. It may not have been perfect but still superior to much of the rubbish currently on television.
