Lucifer Season 2

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

Lucifer is a crime procedural with a wickedly bonkers twist. Satan has swapped hell for present day Los Angeles and a new career as an amateur sleuth. It’s CSI meets Paradise Lost, with a super-sized helping of jokey self-awareness.

Returning to Amazon Prime for a second season as the eponymous Lucifer Morningstar, Welsh-born former EastEnders actor Tom Ellis is a scenery-munching delight. He understands the show, adapted very loosely from a Neil Gaiman comic book, can work only by leaning in to the inherent absurdity of its premise. With an enthusiasm that is indeed devilish, Ellis waggles his eyebrows, delivers his lines with an almost-audible wink and nudge and generally carries on as if playing to the cheap-seats at a pantomime.

Lucifer season 2, episode 1, “Everything Is Coming Up Lucifer,” just finished airing, and daddy issues are the least of the Devil’s worries.

Lucifer season 1 answered many questions that had been lingering all year, but plenty was still left to be tackled in season 2, especially when it came to Chloe and Lucifer’s relationship and the detective’s belief in who Mr. Morningstar really was.

Season 2 still has a procedural element, though I don’t think it needs one to keep the story interesting. The first case was tied into one of the main plots of this season, which is that Lucifer’s mother has escaped Hell, so perhaps they’re looking to adjust the format of the series.

This year, we’ll hopefully be seeing a Lucifer with a much more cohesive storyline. There are plenty of procedurals out there like CSI and Law & Order, but few with a supernatural spin like Lucifer. I’d much rather the show play up the devilish element and downplay the case of the week aspect.

The mystery of mum led the way on Lucifer Season 2 Episode 1 as Chloe and Lucifer investigated the murder of a stand-in actress, and we were introduced to a new character.

It’s almost like we never left as it’s only two days after the events of Lucifer Season 1 Episode 13 where Lucifer almost lost his life and found out his mom had escaped Hell. Lucifer is quite understandably worried about his missing mom, and as we progress through the hour, we realize that her escape has left him far more vulnerable than he even realizes.

With the exception of the introduction of Ella Lopez, which I’ll get to later, I thought the hour was strong and a lot of fun. And, we were definitely left with some intrigue, right?!
