Lucifer Season 3

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

Lucifer is the story of the original fallen angel. Bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, Lucifer Morningstar abandoned his throne and retired to the City of Angels where he has teamed up with LAPD detective Chloe Decker to take down criminals.

Charming, charismatic and devilishly handsome, Lucifer has a way of manipulating people into confessing their deepest, darkest secrets, which helps Chloe deliver justice. But Lucifer quickly discovered that Chloe makes him vulnerable. When he’s around her, the devil can bleed like anyone else. It’s a truly scary realization that doesn’t sit well with his best friend, Mazikeen aka Maze, a fierce demon in the form of a beautiful young woman. Maze wants nothing more than to leave Los Angeles and get back to her life in Hell, but Lucifer is having one hell of a good time with the mortals, and she is not about to leave him behind.

Right from the pilot episode I was addicted to this show. Loved season 2 also but then season 3 went downhill! The first was the way they had Chloe fawning over Pierce and at odds with Lucifer. I didn’t want to see them get together because that generally kills a show but I did NOT like the Chloe/Pierce storyline. Even though I wasn’t crazy about linda/amenadiel story, what they did with maze was awful, how they turned her against EVERYONE ( but then at the end of the season with no explanation it seemed like she was okay with them again)… season 3 was mostly a disaster. I’m glad it got picked up by Netflix for a fourth season but at the same time after reading some online articles it seems like they’re going to be changing the tone of Lucifer. I love the way it was on Fox with the humor mixed with some darkness… just seems like it’s going to lose its “lucifer-ness”

OK, a quick disclaimer, as I write this the news has come in that there will be a fourth season on Netflix. Who knew? That said, it doesn’t actually change my review. When the cast and crew put together Season 3, they thought that it was the final, and it is written and structured that way.

In summary, without major spoilers, in Season 3 the writers and cast are in a comfortable groove. The ensemble cast works well together, and the writing truly clicks. Honestly, most of the acting/performance is really good. Tom Ellis in particular does a great job in the title role.

Don’t be alarmed, it is still “mind candy” (I mean that in the best possible way) without a lot of deep emotional and intellectual issues. You can put your mind in neutral and coast through the visuals, the jokes, and the goofy fun that is the Lucifer series. Lucifer is a guilty pleasure and delivers on its promise.

All of the plot threads and quandaries from the first two seasons are wrapped up by the end of this one, and I highly compliment the writers. The final episode would have been a fulfilling and appropriate way to end the series.

The Season introduces a new face in the precinct, a face familiar to the WB crowd from a young superman. The previously cast Clark Kent is the new Lieutenant.

The Season also pulls out the stops in picking a great antagonist. The main villain this time is the second villain from the Bible, Cain, the first murderer, an excellent choice for the final antagonist.

Lucifer ensures that Cain gets his just desserts by the end of the season.

** Beware Spoilers Follow **

Although we all know that Cain is the main villain in the season, this is not revealed until mid-way though.

The story begins with Lucifer making his way back to LA with his wings, and he has “lost his devil face” too.

We learn in the first few episodes about a new criminal, “the Sinner Man,” who uses Lucifer’s schtick of granting favors to people.

This infuriates Lucifer as he is convinced that someone has intervened to take away his main identifying characteristics including his signature move of granting favors to mortals. He blames his Dad. He looks for other immortals, …

This is all put on hiatus for several episodes where past loose plot threads are examined and wrapped up including Mrs. Lucifer, Maze’s feelings and obsession with humans, … There is even a very clever episode where we visit someone in a hell loop.

Then, we find out that the new Lieutenant is Cain, the first murderer, and he is immortal. He has been following the lives of many immortals that inhabit the Earth including Lucifer, Amedial, … The Lieutenant figures if Chloe can make Lucifer vulnerable then maybe she can grant the Lieutenant’s wish, he just wants to die.

After a few antagonistic passes, the Lieutenant and Lucifer agree to join forces to help Cain die. (Lucifer is helping out to “spite his Dad.”)

Then we get back to the main thread this season. We get to meet the man who claims to be the Sinner Man, and just as Lucifer is about to get the big reveal from the miscreant, Chloe and the new Lieutenant burst in and gun the man down.

Apparently, the Sinner Man thread is closed.

There are many attempts to remove the mark of Cain, and then there is a romance thread for the rest of the Season between the Lieutenant and one of his subordinates, Chloe!

(So, we all realize that in the real-world, such a relationship would be frowned upon, and Chloe would have been transferred to another precinct, or more likely transferred to HQ, if this really happened. I know. I know. Just push the “I believe” button and move on. This is Lucifer after all.)

In falling in love with Chloe, Cain loses his mark and becomes mortal.

Then, … rather than let Lucifer kill him, Cain realizes that he loves life, and reveals that …. he is the Sinner Man.

(To be honest, everyone in the audience at home figured this out by the third episode, but they built it up as a thing anyway.)

In the final episode, Cain kills Ms. Richardson. Amidale regains his wings and flies her to heaven.

Lucifer uses his wings to shield Chloe when Cain tries to kill her, and the final scene …

Lucifer regains his devil face just in time for Chloe to see it and say, “everything Lucifer said is true. It is all TRUE!”

(Fade to black.)

And, it truly would have been a fantastic ending.

I have no clue where you would take it from there in the next season, and to be open, I am ambivalent about watching Season 4.

Based on the ratings so far, I am not alone.

Other shows transferred to Netflix have had the same issue. The Travellers comes to mind. Going from a wild climax in Season 2, the third Season opened with “it was all a dream” (aided by future technology that erased memories, but actually missed the point that the material was out in the Internet and in files of governments throughout the world.

All in all though, I recommend this as a great wrap-up, and whether you decided to see Season 4 or not, all the Lucifer fans out there owe it to themselves to see Season 3.
