Madam Secretary Season 2

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

In her life, Elizabeth McCord (Téa Leoni) has led many roles, as a CIA analyst, a professor, a wife, and a mother… but now, she leads America’s foreign policy as Secretary of State. The sensitive nature of her work creates tension at home when she’s forced to keep secrets from her husband Henry (Tim Daly), recently reactivated as an intelligence asset. As tensions mount with Russia and chaos brews in the Middle East, Elizabeth answers directly to President Conrad Dalton (Keith Carradine). She tries to steer the world back from the brink of war while navigating the complex agenda of Chief of Staff Russell Jackson (Željko Ivanek). Through it all, she knows she can rely on her brilliant staff, spearheaded by seasoned State Department insider Nadine Tolliver (Bebe Neuwirth). The political and personal drama intertwine in 23 globe-spanning episodes, accompanied by eye-opening special features..

I am not a television viewer. In fact, I don’t own a television either. I am a youngish citizen that had lost faith in the mainstream entertainment industry. After finding this show, I subscribed to both seasons. It is marvelous. The quality writing and acting surpass any show in the past decade.

The character profiles of Henry and Elizabeth finally put thoughtful, educated people in a positive light, instead of the way most television shows portray educated people as misguided without common sense.

It is refreshing to see professionals portrayed in careers on television outside of medicine and the law. Philosophical issues have heft, and this show engages issues such as morality, ethics, and logical reasoning. Even the teenagers rise above the typical trashy culture shown in mainstream tv as thoughtful, developing young adults and critical thinkers.

Every character is well developed with the exception of Daisy. The character of Daisy is a mystery. Here is an intelligent character played by a beautiful actress, but she swivels her hips as she strides through scenes like she is working at a bar. She is very body-conscious. Very different from the other main female characters.

Ultimately it is the tone and content of this show that knocks it out of the park. Bravo to the writers for showing the viewers that a philosophy and religious studies background could be useful training in the modern age. A skill doesn’t hurt, but philosophy can help us to think through moral issues.
