MIDSOMER MURDERS: Series 19, Part 1
DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:
There are a couple changes in Series 19. First, D.S. Charlie Nelson has left to take an undercover training course. Taking his place at Barnaby’s side is the young D.S. Jamie Winter. Do you remember how Charlie and pathologist Kam Karimore had a running rivalry in Series 18? Well, Jamie teases Kam, too, but from a different angle.
Secondly, the Barnaby’s beloved doggie Sykes has passed away. In real life, the dog who portrayed Sykes was given a much deserved retirement. I remember in one of the Bonus Features to Series 18, it was mentioned that a dog stunt double was used for a scene where Sykes jumped into a lake, so we knew he was getting long in the tooth…-Happy Reader
Inspector Barnaby has a new partner. I think that’s the fifth one for the series which started years ago. Tom Barnaby had three and John Barnaby has had 2 in his short career. The powers that be always manage to find a good actor with good chemistry for the job. This series is just a continuation of the others. MidSomer must be the murder capital of the world. They never seem to run out of victims and old mansions that the victims live in. The settings of old England are always a pleasure to view especially watching a couple prancing down the narrow roads of a quaint old town on horse back. Although the story lines are still good and the who done it’s are still captivating things are getting expensive. I looked back at some of the older series and one got five episodes each on separate disks. Now it’s four or three on 2 disks and the money is the same. And, when they split a series into two parts that doubles the price. I hope this series continues. It’s one of the few series where the writers don’t try to insult your intelligence with gimmicks, special effects and unrealistic drama like American writers do.-littlemac2
I have every episode beginning with “The Killings at Badger’s Drift” . The last three seasons have become seriously formulaic, especially in the quality of the dialogue. Each episode beginning with Series 17, looks and sounds as if script is an outline and the actors ticking off their lines by the numbers. Compare the early versions, and even the first few seasons with Dudgeon, and you will see the difference. Interaction is stilted and pro forma, the caste is rushing along to get to the end and to something else more important in their lives. Not the actors’ fault, they go with what the writers and producers give them.-D. Hartgrove
