The films do a great job of condensing the plot and make it a lot easier to digest than 40+ episodes. Great plot with iconic characters who shaped the franchise to what it is today. The remastering is top notch and looks very clean. Unfortunately no English dub on this release, but I believe these films should be experienced the way they were meant to be in the original audio. This series holds up just as well as it did 40 years ago and I couldn’t recommend it more.-Wally

A very barebones release of the classic compilation movie trilogy. Each movie is made from original footage from the 1979 anime classic as well as newly animated footage, with the third film having 70% new footage. The 90’s English dub is not included in this release. If you’re new to Gundam, this is one way to get into the franchise without dedicating too much time into a series.-Gabriel Espejo

Mobile suit gundam was originally a television series directed by Yoshiyki Tomino. It was released for the 1979 – 1980 season with 43 episodes. It was edited down to three movies which were released in 1981.
This is an old anime and it shows. The animation hasn’t stood the test of time. The characters will be familiar to anyone who has watched a lot of anime. The young pilot who doesn’t want to fight, etc, etc, etc. The plot is actually quite involved with some nice plot twists and characters who have decent motivation and development.
What ruins it is there is not a single moment of joy or happiness during three whole movies. There’s action, sure but it is depressing. If you ever watched the remake of Battlestar galactica it is rather like that. Hours and hours of misery with no let up.
I can normally excuse an older anime for many things but in this case I’m not even sure I was glad to have seen this foundational anime.
Avoid anti-depressants and give this a miss. There are a lot better Mecha anime.- albionphoto
