NCIS New Orleans Season 3

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

So far, I’m thoroughly impressed with this season, especially with the twists and turns in the earlier episodes. Although it was sad to see Brody up and leave the way she did, and that whole investigation with the threat of disbandment hanging over their heads at the hands of the FBI really had my nerves on edge, the team came out on top in the end.

Just as I felt was the case with the first two seasons, this show is by no means simply a copycat of the original series placed in a different location. It is true that the premise of the show is based on the same formula (which is why its called a ‘spin-off’), but from a writer’s perspective, the show takes that formula, and in a manner similar to what was done with NCIS: Los Angeles, plugged an eccentric variety of components into that formula which gives the show its own identity and life force. One big factor in this chemistry is the locality, and with it comes the culture and the atmosphere of that locality. I think the show does a fantastic job of conveying the culture of the city itself as well as shedding new light on Southern culture altogether, and I’m not alone in this feeling. Last year, the show’s cast and CBS were awarded the 2016 Celluloid Hero Award from the New Orleans Film Society for the positive impact on television in Louisiana, which I have to admit is pretty awesome.

The characters all seem to be taking things up a notch this season, particularly Pride. In Episode 11, “Let it Ride”, he really steps up to the plate by basically going rogue and teaming up with Gregorio to take down Garcia, and was continuously adamant against letting his team help out, both for the sake of their lives and the agency, even though they all joined him anyway and stood by him to the end. This is repeated again in the following episode, “Hell on High Water”, when Pride is stuck on an oil rig in danger of explosion. In assessing the danger at hand, he never showed any consideration for his own safety, but for his team, by warning them to stay away from the rig, for the crew on the rig by helping the woman he teamed up with get to the rest of the crew and instruct them to evacuate, and finally, to lead those in charge in the task of adverting the explosion. Altogether, showing bravery in its truest form. This episode in particular stood out as it came to illustrate the atmosphere surrounding the Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill in the gulf.

In this season, LaSalle has also gone to great lengths and shown his true colors. In the past two seaons, LaSalle has undoubtedly, as Loretta put it, drawn every bad card, as he’s dealt with the problems surrounding his mentally ill brother Cade, who was nearly wrongly charged for a murder he didn’t commit, and then losing his girlfriend to the serial criminal Baitfish. All that combined should be enough to make or break a man, but he seems to have grown stronger in face of all this, as is evident in the earlier episodes of this season, when an old girlfriend, Melody, resurfaces in his life with a young son named Tucker, who she claims is his son. He takes them in to his home and struggles with adjusting to being a new father, only to find out he really isn’t Tucker’s father. The boy’s real father is Melody’s abusive ex-boyfriend Daryl, who she’s trying to escape from. At first he takes this all pretty hard, but when he learns the whole story from Melody, he pushes his own feelings aside and does everything he can to protect Melody and Tucker. He manages to unearth some outstanding warrants against Daryl in Texas and coupled with Daryl assaulting him at the NCIS headquarters, has him arrested, ensuring he won’t be bothering Melody anymore. As Melody packs and leaves, he shows no bad feelings against her and wishes her the best.

Gregorio, on the other hand, has surprised me the most, especially considering she’s a brand-new character. At the beginning of the season, she came off as an antagonist to the core, as she was working with the FBI in investigating Pride and his team. What really threw me for a curve ball is that within the course of a handful of episodes, her character does a complete 180 degree turn by getting fired from the FBI and joining Pride’s team with NCIS. In a manner similar to the way Sonja Percy joined them the year before, Gregorio finds the family-like atmosphere of Pride’s team appealing and believe it or not, I think she actually fits in with the team very well. This is particularly well demonstrated in “Let it Ride” in her determination to help Pride take down Garcia, the most poignant being her saying to Pride “That’s how you taught us to roll”.

I’ve heard a bit of gabble surrounding the show’s ratings dip from last season, and I for one don’t think it’s due to the writing, but rather more a combination of McLellan’s sudden departure, the unexpected and tragic passing of the show’s creator, Gary Glasberg back in September, and CBS’ decision to move the show back to the 9 PM timeslot. I’ve heard a lot of viewers expressing the opinion that NCIS: New Orleans should be moved to a different night, as it is currently literally living in the original show’s shadow. Moving it to its own night could do a world of good for the viewers and the ratings, as it did for NCIS Los Angeles, but at this point all we can do is cross our fingers and hope for the best.

I had been trying to find this show on DVD for a reasonable price and Amazon was my answer! I ordered Seasons 1,2,&,3 and the slipcases for Seasons 1&2 were kind of distressed but, the DVD cases and the discs all look spotless and so far I have had no problems with the discs playing correctly. The third set, Season 3, came in perfect condition. Overall, I am pleased with this purchase and can’t complain about the price one bit! So excited to own one of my favorite shows!

Episode 14 of NCIS-NOLA’s excellent third season is a crossover with NCIS. Agents Torres and McGee travel from Washington, D.C., to help the New Orleans track down a stolen computer full of secrets before the thief can sell it to the highest bidder. New Orleans is full of Mardi Gras celebrants, and a killer who is picking off potential buyers for the computer, one by one. Agent Pride and his team find themselves one step behind a ruthless killer or killers, with an agent missing and the clock running…

“Pandora’s Box, Part II” is a good episode that shares the screen time around nicely among the agents. Agent Gregorio meets a new “friend”, Sebastian meets his “future self”, and Special Agent in Charge Dwayne Pride tries to keep the lid on an ugly case. Highly recommended.
