My husband and I have been watching this show for a long time, and what I love about it is the strong, loving relationships within the family. There is a genuine warmth and caring between the characters that supersedes any petty grievances that might arise. That’s what keeps me coming back again and again. In a world where everything seems to be moving more and more towards the “edgy” ,dark , violent and convey a sense of hopelessness – here is the antidote. No, it’s not “Father Knows Best” by a long shot! The father, in this case, Zeek – played brilliantly by Craig T. Nelson – is often conflicted, confused, or unsure of himself. But there is wisdom in being able to look a grandchild squarely in the eye and say, “I don’t know, Sweetheart.” So – Zeek gets my vote for Father Of The Year. If I have any small issue with this show its that they use this technique of swinging the camera back and forth between characters during a dialog. I’m not sure what the intended effect is, but it kind of gives me whiplash. (I would prefer a simple 2-shot where you just see both characters as they talk back and forth.) But that’s just me. If it weren’t for that I would give the series an enthusiastic 5 star rating.

This show never fails to amaze me. It’s truly an ensemble cast. Every single one of the characters is important and would be sorely missed if they weren’t there. It’s a drama, but it makes me laugh out loud. It’s so real. It tackles real issues, and I think in some way, each of us finds aspects of these characters that we can relate to in some way. And so we care about the character. We laugh with them, we grieve with them, we rage with them, we cry with them, and we love with them. I own all 5 seasons, and I have loved them all. I enjoy watching the children grow up and the family change. The actors have tremendous talent. I forget I’m watching actors, and get sucked right into the story… now that’s a good story! This is a wonderful story of family, so if you haven’t yet seen it, I highly recommend that you set aside some time, start from the beginning, and get to know the Braverman Clan. You won’t regret it!

This show, in concept and execution, is among the very best television series ever produced. That it was the recipient of few, if any, awards does not diminish its artistry; but, sadly, exposes how inconsequential the self-acclaimed “experts” in programming quality have become. The greatness of “Parenthood’s” legacy will, we believe, continue to grow in the years ahead… and it is a fitting tribute that its six seasons will now become a treasured part of DVD collections–to be viewed again and again; and, especially important, made available to those who did not have an opportunity to experience the artistry of “Parenthood” when it originally aired.
