Passengers [Blu-ray]

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

This movie does a fine job exploring its principle dilemma–what would you do if you are the one person accidentally awakened out of thousands of other people on an ark bound for a new world? The others won’t wake for another 90 years. What would you do? In what is essentially a three-person movie-with one of them being a robot-this fine SF story explores that problem against the backdrop of a slowly escalating calamity–the ship is gradually malfunctioning. But the real question at the heart of this movie is a romantic one–how we love who we love. What makes and defines a relationship? I know there are some that might have expected this to be some version of the Guardians of the Galaxy and were disappointed when they discovered it wasn’t. I’m sure the presence of Chris Pratt made some people assume it would be a thrill-ride of sorts. That’s not to say there are some terrific elements that raise the stakes, but that’s not the main course in this movie. It’s about relationships. Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence are very believable and their chemistry sells the relationship, In a quirky supporting role of the bartender-robot, Michael Sheen proves the perfect foil. The special effects are on par with any you’ve seen and I found the story well-paced and very enjoyable. I highly recommend it.- Tony R.

On my list of all-time favorites…if gauged by how many times I have re-watched it in part or whole. But if you succumbed to the rhetoric and over-analysis of those who have panned this film, then I must be the shallowest, unenlightened, too easily pleased viewer. I watch movies to be told a story and be pleased. So, Suspend your disbelief and ignore those reviewers whose expectations fell pitifully short. This movie is for the majority of viewers who want to sit back and be absorbed in a grand story. Particularly when the story evokes so many thoughts about the circumstance and possibilities…about how the two main characters will live out their lives on a remarkable interstellar flight. The contrast of two passengers in such a massive venue, in deepest space on a 120 year journey, is a visual feast. There’s a difference between low expectations and a high imagination. The former suggests the lack of the latter. Enjoy the ride.-A W

Theater review. Possible spoilers. This movie is getting trashed by many critics for not being something they expected or just skimming the surface on the key moralistic decision made by one of the characters. So, I’m going to try to defend the movie. Having been overwhelmed by numerous trailers and TV promos for the movie I was expecting an action based film with a secondary and ominous subplot (monsters, sabotage, etc.). It isn’t.- M. Oleson
