Scorpion Season 1
DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:
Scorpion is a high-octane thill ride based on the true story of Walter O’Brien, an eccentric genius with the world’s fourth-highest I.Q. and the creator of a company of brilliant misfits who use their mental muscle to defend the planet against complex high-tech threats of the modern age.
CBS’s Scorpion is an action series that features a team of brilliant but unconventional, and somewhat socially challenged individuals, enlisted to help the Government meet various situations, that other personnel are unable to handle.
While not exactly a new concept, the series may have what it takes to succeed, as it features an interesting and fresh cast, some strong central themes, including a sense of humanity, and based on the premiere episode, a substantial budget, and a willingness to go completely over the top.
Computer whiz Walter O’Brien (Elyes Gabel) is the leader of the Scorpion group, which includes human behavior expert Toby Curtis (Eddie Kaye Thomas), mechanical genius Happy Quinn (Jadyn Wong), and statistical analyst Sylvester Dodd (Ari Stidham). Veteran Robert Patrick (Terminator 2,The Unit) is Cabe Gallow, a Federal agent with Homeland Security, who is authorized to recruit the group. The premiere episode also introduces Paige Dinnen (Katharine McPhee, Smash,Katharine McPhee), a waitress and mother of a gifted son named Ralph (Riley B. Smith).
It’s not wise to draw too many conclusions from just one episode, but it seems clear that Scorpion will feature lots of high tech wizardry, various kinds of major threats, and plenty of insane action. The team will amaze and amuse, as they carry on with an abundance of style and smartass attitude. The scientific approach will be tempered by Gallow and government protocols, and also humanistic elements, often represented by Paige and Ralph.
Geeks with a sense of style and attitude, have found an audience many times before. Scorpion brings to mind the CBS series Numb3rs (2005-10), among others, and there is a good chance that the series will appeal to a younger demographic. It’s clearly not meant to be taken too seriously, blending deadly threats, with humor, quirky elements, and messages regarding compassion. And for a limited time, you can get the premiere episode for free, and add it to your video collection.
Walter O’Brien is a real person, and the series is loosely based on his life. A computer expert, O’Brien did form a company called Scorpion, and he serves as a consultant for the series.

The technical part of this show gets an A+. The costume, makeup, sets, camera, ect. are what you would expect from Hollywood. While the show doesn’t use the camera quite like Person of Interest (making some of the scenes so funny;) the camera is always in the right place to tug on your heartstrings (last scene ;).
The technical stuff is easy, when comparing it to finding a good story line.
-Realistic enough that it doesn’t make mistakes blatantly obvious.
-And fictional enough that you can enjoy the characters’ good fortune as your own.
This show does exceedingly well in both.
While I am no Einstein (let alone Walter O’Brian) a lot of the emotion they put into the characters’ profiles I can really relate to. (while at the same time ignoring some of my faults).
In second grade I wrote a subtraction problem backwards. My teacher pointed this out and said it was wrong. I replied with asking if the answer was just a negative number. My teacher denied the Existence of negative numbers. (Can you tell that I’m still a tad miffed about this?)
Regardless of my intelligence I was incredibly slow at completing work because I wanted my work to be perfect.
This lead to me being in the awkward position of being both smart and slow (thorough). I was either bored or behind (or both)(recess did not see much of me).
So to see intelligence so accurately represented is refreshing.
It isolates, so you try and connect like the behaviorist, OCD and pressure make working hard, and the length of memory makes every mistake come back to haunt you.

I decided to actually write a review for this show because after reading some of these reviews, I felt like some praise was necessary. This is an good, fun show. I’ve watched every episode this season and I realized that above all else, I’m watching for the characters and their relationships with one another. By nature, the show seems formulaic: Super genius awkward/cute guy forms a group of like minded (and socially inept) genius’s to help people, working with Homeland Security (edit) to solve crimes. There to help them interact better with normal people is a sweet ex waitress and single mom to a super genius 8 year old. OK, so YES, there are plot points and whole driven episodes that are so unbelieveable (Spoilers ahead) Do I think that they could drive that car under that airplane just to keep the dowload going…No. Do I think they should ever be dragged into a combat zone with armed rebels…. HELL NO….do I think they would be able to break out of jail and zip line across buildings into a high security casino…No No no because that zipline was mad scary. BUT none of this matters to me in the slightest because its Fun. It’s exciting. And throughout all these misadventures we get to watch our group of unlikely heroes and social misfits back eachother up and try to relate to the outside world (and eachother) Also, Katharine McPhee is soo likeable, its kind of adorable. If you are interested in a Jack Bower-esque show, go watch reruns of 24. This show is action with some emotional fluff, and lots of heart. Watch it for that.
