Suicide Squad
DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:
There are some very fine actors in “Suicide Squad.”
There are some really great action sequences as well as some clever dialogue
But despite those attributes the film didn’t rise to the level of a great movie.
The reason: It was in many respects self indulgent, which is to say that director David Ayer didn’t seem to understand the old axiom that sometimes less is more. As a result “Suicide Squad” is probably 20 minutes too long.
As a writer myself I think I know why: Ayer not only directed the film, he wrote the screenplay. I know from bitter experience that it’s extremely hard to cut your own work (that’s one of the reasons we have editors – and one of the many reasons why so many writers don’t like them.) The reality is that it’s terribly difficult to – as Hemingway once said – “kill your darlings,” by which he meant that, sometimes, you have to get rid of sentences and scenes that, while marvelous, just don’t work in the context of a novel or a screenplay.
It’s not impossible to write and direct a movie. Orson Welles did, after all, and down through the years there have been men and women who have accomplished this feat – not many, mind you, but a few.
In this case, however, it’s my opinion that Ayer didn’t quite accomplish that task.
The movie is entertaining. I don’t mean to suggest otherwise.
But it doesn’t quite rise to the level of a 5-star film, which is too bad given the excellent performances of many of the actors and the very intriguing premise.
