The Americans Season 4

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

And I thought seasons 1-3 were gut wrenching…
Season four sees Philip and Elizabeth “dealing with all they’ve wrought”… and man, do they.
Philip has to cope with Martha and the FBI… and Elizabeth and Philip both have to cope with the ongoing weight of Pastor Tim. Paige is a phenomenal actress and her reactions are SO REAL. Yes, she can be a bit whiny (let’s face it, kids often are…), but we also see a new side of her when Philip and Elizabeth have a job that goes terribly wrong.

The second half of the season, as Elizabeth befriends Connie is very interesting to me. She finally has a friend, and yet, this friendship ends in a horrible betrayal. I ended up feeling horrible for Elizabeth and Connie after that episode, mostly because I know Elizabeth is so deeply invested in the life she leads it takes a near death experience to have her see that other options are possible. Although, you know she is deeply invested in Philip when gives him the ok to leave with Martha.

Philip continues to be a deeply enigmatic character. The easy assumption is that he is not as deeply invested in the cause as Elizabeth (remember in season one when Elizabeth says he liked it here too much?). He visits Est (and likes it…), he also turns down Elizabeth’s suggestion to leave, and we learn more about his childhood, all I can say is WOW. The ultimate moment this season in their relationship was when he says to Elizabeth prior to her torching her relationship with Connie was, “We can tell them you tried and failed…” She doesn’t have faith in the Center’s ability to conduct the operation without her, so she goes through with it. I guess I see him as just as determined as Elizabeth, but I tend to believe he is atoning for something rather than being the firebrand she is. Ultimately, I believe this makes him a more sympathetic and human character than Elizabeth has been. I do feel like we get to see parts of Elizabeth’s softer side this season, after all, she punches Martha rather than killing her because she knows how important she is to Philip.

Paige sees more development this year, while Henry continues in blissful ignorance. Paige’s relationship with Pastor Tim and her faith become a bit more strained as the secret wears on. It is very interesting stuff.

The fourth season of “The Americans” continues the same slow burn of the previous three seasons. The tension keeps building as Soviet KGB spies Philip and Elizabeth Jennings try to maintain their cover lifestyle as parents and travel agents while neck deep in espionage.

Daughter Paige who last season found out her parents secret finds that knowing the truth is more difficult than she could imagine. Her confusion results in a breach of trust that has major consequences. Their FBI neighbor Stan Beeman faces his own difficulties at the office with his suspicions about his boss’s secretary Martha. Martha of course is the hapless dupe that Philip has been manipulating to spy for him and her world is irreversibly changed this season. They also kill off two long running characters whose loss may surprise some viewers. As always there are somewhat graphic sex scenes and partial nudity that will offend folks of certains sesibilities so beware.

We know that “The Americans” will be wrapping up the series after Season 6 so with two more seasons to go one has to wonder how things will be resolved given how events are gradually unraveling. I’ll be watching to the bitter end.

I was shocked to see any less than 5 star reviews but found they actually were concerning availability issues. When I find something extraordinary, I try to tell as many people as possible. Simply put, The Americans is exceptional. There are not a lot of fancy props or cinematographic wizardry, just many actors at the top of their profession all in the same series. If you have not seen the first three seasons, schedule some time and start at the beginning. It only gets better. Also, be sure to catch Noah Emmerich, who plays FBI agent, Stan Beeman in the season 4 preview. Listen to how articulate and intelligent he sounds and contrast that with his portrayal of Beeman and you can appreciate how he took it down a notch to come across not so well put together. It says a lot about the rest of the cast that the weakest performance comes from Emmy Award winning actor Richard Thomas.
