The Catch Season 1

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

I’m in three episodes so far. Fast-paced, sexy, with a surprisingly good soundtrack. Awesome split-screen editing like classic espionage/action/thriller movies. Peter Krause is super intense and pulls off a conflicted con man with a conscience, at least you would hope. Mirielle Enos is an interesting mix of steel and velvet and looks way more glamorous in this role than before in the Killing. Valerie is super sexy, and a great best friend/business partner. Danny Yoon’s character is really good in support, as are all of them. Polished actors who keep it light and fun but also intense and maybe a little sinister? Margot is my favorite character of all, I’ll let you discover her for yourself. Didn’t think I’d like it this much since I’m a guy and this show features lots of strong women, who are to put it nicely, “working on their relationships,” but it’s catnip to my wife so that’s all good! Also love the settings, lots of high-end hotels and restaurants and lofts with killer views and slick cars like the new Audi RS7 that you rarely or never get to see on the road.

The easy comparison of the show is to The Thomas Crown Affair, where a thief and con man (Peter Krause), runs a con against yet falls for a private investigator (Mireille Enos), and she tries to take him down. That is the basic storyline of season 1, but it actually takes a lot of twists and turns along the way (for a 10 episode season) and really sets up a more promising (if it is done right) season 2.

The show is another in the line of the Shonda Rimes production machine. It is well written and acted, and while there is some soap opera like feel to it, the show does have some substance. Even so it does not try to be more than it is, and blends humor, drama, and suspense in a way to be enjoyable but not take itself too seriously. For fans of the show The Killing, it is weird to see Mireille Enos as glammed up as she sometimes is in this show, when her character on the Killing was the total opposite of glamorous. While I would never thought of her for a role like this coming off that show, she pulls it off well, and does a good job with a character that is strong and confident at times and insecure and unsure at others.

The show has some case of the week flavor to it, and few of the characters are all good or all bad. Most of the main cast of characters are more layered and interesting. It is not a show that is likely to appeal to everyone, but I do think it is worth checking out and giving it a shot. For those who do get the DVDs, the extras are pretty thin. Just a few deleted scenes (about 9 min worth) and a blooper reel, so for most streaming the show will probably be fine.

First off the show is good and you should watch it. It’s balanced enough so that it will both appeal to Shonda Rhimes fans and those who aren’t. The first episode is good and will get you to want to see the next episode. There is one scene where you’ll scream at the TV that’s so dumb but it’s not too much to put you off. Alice is smart and kickass so you’ll want to see how she’ll ultimately take down her man. The other characters are very meh but this is the pilot so we don’t know much about them yet. the final scene in the pilot makes you believe that Alice is ready to play and it’s very exciting. The show has a lighter tone that the rest of the TGIT line up which has been very dark lately (including Grey’s). The shonda name to the show gives people the expectation of twist after the twist but remember this is the pilot. There is no big twists or deaths because again this is only the first episode. It’s interesting and obviously there will be twists in later episodes. It is a good show and better than the alternative shows given at the 10pm time slot on other channels. Plus it’s time for a lighter show so that you don’t fall into a depression watching the rest of the TGIT line up.
P.S I do love the rest of the TGIT line up so no offense to those shows.
