The Doctor Blake Mysteries Season 3
DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:
This the third Doctor Blake DVD I purchased and I have enjoyed this as much as the previous two. The Aussies (and New Zealanders) have provided at least 3 mature murder mysteries in recent years. Gone are the American fixation with absurd car race/crash and unnecessary bloody scenes and welcome to a more mature investigating procedure – although sometimes humanly flawed. Good buy!

This series has really hooked me. Craig McIachlan is wonderful in the role of a doctor whose father (also a doctor) was dearly loved but whom he feels compared to constantly. The series is set in a small town in Australia in the 50’s and Doctor Blake struggles not only with the horrors of his time served in the Australian army during World War II in the Pacific (which included being imprisoned in a Japanese prison camp) but also the disappearance of his wife and daughter during the war. My father-in-law also served in the Pacific in WWII, and while I know the American side of the war pretty well, I know next to nothing about the other countries that fought with us. If that is not enough, Doctor Blake is a police surgeon who follows his conscience but not always the rules. So besides being a cleverly written murder mystery series, you have the police procedural, his work in 50’s medicine and forensics in Australia, and the cultural scene in Australia over 60 years ago. There are also secrets about him and other cast members that come out as the episodes unfold adding to the mystery. The supporting cast is excellent and you would not want to part with any of them. I’m so glad I took a chance on this series and have already ordered season 4.

Cannot recommend Dr Blake series highly enough. Extremely well-written and acted and filmed and cast. The title The Doctor Blake Mysteries refers not only to the mystery at hand (a murder) but also to Dr Blake’s past (service in WWII, childhood losses, whereabouts of his wife and daughter) which we learn little by little. Key ingredients: common sense (usually housekeeper Jean’s), intuition, reenactments (sometimes dangerous), lively supper table discussions (with boarders policeman Danny/Charlie and nurse Mattie), 1959 forensics which can only go so far, and a romance blossoming ever so slowly between the two main characters who hold themselves back for various reasons. The killer is never a psycho/sicko but someone believable, redeemable. Re-watching (esp. with subtitles for non-Aussies) pays huge dividends because all the pieces are there from the beginning; you just didn’t know it. We’ve loved Seasons 1-3 and await Season 4 on DVD or Netflix. Wish it could go on forever but Season 5 will be the last at least on ABC.
