The Durrells Season 3

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

I am really enjoying this series. But it is only slightly related to the actual books.

My Family and Other Animals is the first of series of 3 written by Gerald Durrell, a famous naturalist. I read these books about 2-3 years ago, and loved them – especially the first So, when I discovered that a TV series had been created around these books, I was eager to watch.

I have really enjoyed the three seasons (all watched within the past 2-3 months). However, just wanted to comment that they are only very superficially related to the original books — most of the content is completely fictitious, the imagination of the screen writers, and NOT taken from the books.

The TV series uses the same setting (British widow and children move to Corfu), and some of the characteristics of the family members and a few other characters (e.g. Stephanides). And some incidents (e.g. Gerald becoming friends with a convict, and thinking that a tutor’s references to visiting his mother related to needing to use the restroom) — were vaguely taken from the books. But 90% of other characters and incidents in the series are not related to the books at all. This doesn’t take away from the enjoyment and good acting of the TV series! But thought I would mention this.

Of course it’s 5-star entertainment. It has drama, love, snorting humor, blissful sets, and a storyline that is worthy of being a Masterpiece series. You don’t need to be up on the journey of the Durrell family; but I strongly recommend buying seasons one through three, and watching them in order. I’ve been with this show from the start and have seen the depth of the characters develop to the extraordinary proportions presented in this third season. In this rewarding 3rd year it is very difficult to choose a favorite character. The company has blended into a unit as was the case with Downton Abbey. Even the maid shows her personality. Durrells in Corfu is simply fun, fun, fun viewing.- Harold Wolf

I love this series and now have the luxury to watch this again and again which is great. Next time I’m snowed in I intend to binge. The characters are fun as well as the setting.

Now I have one concern when buying Masterpiece versions. Was ten minutes cut from each episode? I say this because I had to buy this Masterpiece version rather than the original British release. Let me explain. I love the Lewis and Joan Hickson Miss Marple series. I had bought Masterpiece versions at first then found each episode ten minutes shorter than the BBC or ITV version because PBS uses the last ten minutes of the hour to show previews and promotions. So I bought a region-free DVD player and bought all my favorite series from Amazon UK. I also buy British, German, Scandinavian and Australian series this way as I’ve moved to an area where fewer mystery series and dramas are shown on my local PBS stations. (They don’t show enough cooking shows either.)-Dinkydoright
