The Terror Season 1

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

Praise be for GPS. A British naval expedition to find the fabled Northwest Passage to Asia in the mid-1800’s goes horribly as each possible route through the poorly mapped north of Canada just leads to ice. Though the crews of both ships are well-provisioned, there is little to help them out of the extreme claustrophobia. Their sanity rests on the edge of a knife and, to make matters considerably worse, their presence has disturbed a vicious creature roaming amidst the gigantic chunks of ice, virtually impossible to see. The writing is stronger earlier in the series and loses some of the tension that it formerly had. The tone changes as arctic wasteland replaces the inside of a ship and towards the end becomes rather unwieldy, a place where action would do nicely in place of dialogue. The acting is strong – many of the actors are veterans of other acclaimed shows. The direction is good but sometimes a little too indulgent of barren rock (without ever quite getting to the galling psychological impact such an environment would produce). The production quality is high across the board.. I would definitely recommend it though I would advise the viewer to binge on it – the total effect will be greater.

A must see “binge” worth series. Actually the first series is the only series since it is done and over at the last episode. The story itself is true. British expedition to find the mythical “northwest passage.” Square riggers with steam engines retrofitted. Ships were never heard of again with these exceptions: cryptic note left in a cairn in Canada by one of the Captains; and the recent discovery of the sunk but wholly intact Terror. This is a fictionalized version of what might have happened to the crew with a bit of Inuit mysticism added into the story line. Still, my wife and I found this to be a riveting and very well acted and written series.

The Terror starts out a little slow in order to introduce you to as many of its characters as possible. It is hard to keep up with who is who when almost everyone has a beard, and some of the accents are hard to understand. Nevertheless, the show hits its stride by episode four and does not let up. The series is suspenseful, well-written, well-acted, and bleak. This is not the Hallmark version of what happens when men are pitted against nature and each other in a quest to survive. The Terror is gruesome, tragic, and profound.
