Twin Peaks: The Complete Series
DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:
The wonderful Twin Peaks: The Return prompted me to buy first Fire Walk With Me and then the first two seasons (I’d lost my original copies somewhere in the intervening years). Seeing the powerful Return made me realize what the first two seasons could have been without network interference and with David Lynch hands on from start to finish. Even with network meddling and Lynch distracted by making a movie at the same time, it still stands as the most original, heartwrenching drama ever presented on american television, a show that made subsequent hits like the X-Files and Lost possible, among many others. The thing that remains with me is the fact that David Lynch is a filmmaker with the sensibility of an artistic painter and that is very difficult to shoehorn into a network tv show. Having a week in between episodes and then a summer between seasons in not conducive to the way to view the series. Like a film, it needs to be watched without interruptions and then you’re able to appreciate the flow and continuity of it. The second season, which critics and fans soured on, is better than I remembered if taken in this way. The Return was able to both expand on and complete the themes of the first two seasons and Fire Walk With Me, Lynch having almost autonomous freedom to film as he wished and tell the story he and Mark Frost wanted to tell. As for this Gold Edition, it is packed with extras and interesting takes on the how the show became a worldwide phenomenon. The first season and the first few episodes of season 2 are amazing, right up to the reveal of who killed Laura Palmer. The performances, by newcomers and Hollywood veterans, are precise and memorable and a joy to witness. There is no bad time to enter the Twin Peaks universe and I would strongly recommend this edition of the show and the Fire Walk With Me movie and the Return 18-episode wonder to anyone who’s a film buff, an art connoisseur or who loves to be thrilled and challenged and entertained in the best ways possible.

I rated the set with 4 stars due to the poor packaging. Several have reported a problem with some of the discs not playing properly or not playing all of the tracks. I received my Gold Box set and found that ALL of the package “pages” had a blemish that was molded into the plastic. Just above the hub and about halfway to the edge, there is a rather sharp round plastic protrusion that is/can contact the disc and scratch it (depending on how much the disc moves in handling). This is a manufacturing defect the appears to be in the die used to cast the disc holding “pages” of the package. The blemish is in the same spot on every plastic “page”. If you want to repair the package rather than return it as defective (and your discs are not already damaged), you can carefully shave away the plastic blemish on each and every “page”. Then, use some very fine (600 grit) abrasive paper to “polish” the area so that it will not do any future damage to the discs.

TWIN PEAKS focuses on a small town’s reaction to the grisly murder of the high-school’s homecoming queen. The chain of events that this sets into motion are strange, humorous, horrifying, and dreamy. Fans of the X-FILES, THE KILLING, and LOST will find that this show’s influences are wide and far reaching. I’m not quite sure this show is for everyone though; there are times when the story grinds to a halt, melodramatic and self-aware romances feel like soap operas, and things just don’t make logical sense. These elements will probably annoy people, but for others, it’s what gives TWIN PEAKS its quirky unique charm. This Gold Box Edition is recommended for both newbies to the TWIN PEAKS world and to veterans of the show who weathered through the season 1 and 2 DVDs. The updates here are definitely worth the price of admission to justify repurchasing this content.
