Van Helsing Season 1
DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:
Three years after the start of a vampire apocalypse, a young woman, hidden in a derelict medical facility and guarded by a dedicated young marine named Axel, is attacked by vampires. She survives the attack, and a subsequent assault, displaying superhuman fighting and healing abilities. Her name is Vanessa, and she is a descendant of the famed vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing. She may, or may not, be a savior for the few surviving humans in the world…
This exciting and rather gory SyFi tv series gets a lot out of some minimalist production values and some decent acting by Kelly Overton as Vanessa and Jonathan Scarfe as Axel. Try it for the horror, stay for the human drama. Recommended.

I enjoyed this more than I probably should have. It was immensely helped along by a couple great leads (Kelly Overton and Jonathan Scarfe), and less so by what proved to be an almost cliché regurgitation of past roles by Christopher Heyerdahl. The show doesn’t have near the depth of Walking…, and it’s a lot more predictable. But as a fan of Walking, I couldn’t help but enjoy Van Helsing for it’s similarities. It’ll be up to the shows second season to really define it and determine whether it’ll prove as lasting as the series it seemingly attempts to emulate. Be warned that the season finale isn’t any kind of ending. It’s not an upsettingly melodramatic cliffhanger either. It just plays out like another episode, with a “more-to-come” finale that was a little too cheaply unresolved for my taste, in a age where shows get canceled so irresponsibly and frivolously.

What an interesting version of Van Helsing! My only real criticism of this series is that it replicates the series The Walking Dead! The zombies become vampires — or rather, the feral vampires. The plot follows very similar lines. But it’s still a rollicking ride! I’ll certainly want more seasons as they come available.
