12 Monkeys Season 2

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

I thought long and hard about a accurate review that would help people understand why this show is worth watching. I love the show so I don’t want to come off as biased because everyone has their taste in what they like in a show. Many magazines, online sites, and reviewers probably get paid to write reviews so there’s a chance you may not take their word for it. There’s reviews for this show are relatively good. One review said “It’s the best show on TV that your not watching” (I’m paraphrasing), that review is sooooo spot on when talking about this show. I’d suggest giving the show a good try. The show deals with the aspect of time travel so it has the potential to confuse you if you half-heartedly pay attention, which is why I say give it a good try. I think that it’s worth it. For me, as the story unfolded, I was wowed. I’m finishing up season 2 and I’m wowed. I can’t find another word for how I feel.

I love this amazing show. It’s so well made. I enjoyed season 1, which loosely follows the plot of the movie. But I was curious how they were going to keep that plot fresh into season 2. There was a real risk of this show getting stale.

But to the credit of the writers they used the time machine to tweak the plot (I’m not going to give away any details) in a way that works very well and keeps the plot fresh for season 2. When I say they use the time machine, I mean they incorporate the change of direction the plot takes into the script of the show. They don’t just do what other shows do which is change a bunch of stuff and hope you don’t notice the discontinuity. In short, this is BRILLIANTLY written sci fi. It’s easy for sci fi to turn out cheesy when done by an inexperienced writing team. But this group is awesome.

I think I like it better than season 1 simply because the writing staff isn’t tethered to the plot line of the original movie as much. They keep with the overall theme but get to come off the leash more and show their talents. Season 2 stars off as a continuation of season 1’s story but a few episodes in it starts to get even more interesting.

As for the production quality of the show…it’s top notch. Set design, costumes, etc..it’s all great. And that’s not easy to do on a show that spans at least a century of time. The future looks…apocalyptic but futurey, the past visually matches the time period it’s supposed to. Its’ really well made.

The acting of Aaron Stanfield (James Cole) gets better in season 2 as well. Partly this is because the cast around him has an increased role so the Cole character doesn’t have to hold up the entire series on his own. But partly it’s because he just doesn’t a better job acting this year.

They also introduce Michael Hogan (From Battlestar Gallactica) as a bit of a side character this year. He doesn’t have a huge role, but he’s an amazing actor and having him on the show is fracking wonderful.

And what they do with the crazy people (Originally Brad Pitt in the movie, now Emily Hampshire and others in the TV Show) is really creative and expands their place in the plot immensely from season 1 (and from the movie).

All in all this is great Sci Fi.

Don’t try to watch this without seeing season 1 first or you’ll be totally lost. But I highly recommend giving this series a go.

If you loved the “12 Monkeys” movie and/or time travel theories, you will really enjoy this show. HOWEVER, just like the movie, you need to pay attention – this isn’t a show you can just play for background noise and expect to catch everything the first time you watch it. This is deliciously detailed and very complex; I loved the movie and fell in love with this show, and I am normally not a fan when that happens. The show used the same main characters and main plot as the movie, but expounds on it a LOT which gives an amazing backstory to the 12 monkeys storyline, all while remaining loyal to the original movie without destroying anything from it. Just keep in mind: this is not a ‘mindless’ show – you will be engaged and using your thinker, which always tells me is a good show.
