The Handmaid’s Tale Season 1 [Blu-ray]
DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:
Phenomenal acting especially by Elizabeth Moss. A timely, cautionary tale about the bit by bit erosion of a democracy and loss of civil rights we currently take for granted – haunting and terrifying and unfortunately all too possible. A must see.-Coffee Lover
Atwood is a storytelling genius, so I’ll admit I was skeptical how the producers and writers would handle it, but I’m positively amazed how true they were able to stand by the original story, its details, and its tone. I understand how the smaller backstory tweaks had to be made to keep relevancy in the way a war like this, and its aftermath would be fought today- even only a mere 30+ years after the original book. The visual details, the claustrophobia, the blacks, sepia browns and reds and close up shots enrich the discomfort of the material. They even kept the sparse dialog and empty space to unsettle you. Cool.
I almost never say a feature is better than a written original, but this is damn close- this world is unsettlingly real and possible now, imaginable now that I’ve seen how it would play out. That so rarely happens when artistic liberties are taken, but i feel that Atwood herself could have made this series, and I MAD RESPECT MGM and Hulu for doing that here. Props.-Amazon Customer
This is based on a dystopian novel written in the 80’s. It is excellent but it is hard to watch and pretty depressing so I recommend skipping it if you prefer cheerful shows. Some of the low reviews are because the viewers didn’t pay attention to the mature rating and didn’t bother to look up what the show was about. It certainly won’t be for everyone, but there are issues in this show/novel that are still going on today in other parts of the world and I think that everyone should at least give it a shot. The book is wonderful however I think a visual impact really brings home the atrocities in a way that words cannot.
Someone mentioned the music being jarring since it’s happy 80’s pop but I think they missed the point – these scenes are times when the protagonist is experiencing some small amount of freedom. I think it conveys the feeling well.-The Dandy Brandy
