Constantine: The Complete Series [Blu-ray]
DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:
This really was a show that was tailor made to air on The CW, but was probably too close to its longest running show, Supernatural, to be picked up there. So it ended up on NBC in the Friday night death slot and never really caught on, and hence just lasted the one partial season. It is based on the very popular comic of the same name which follows the exploits of John Constantine, played by Matt Ryan, who is an exorcist/user of dark magic who tries to rid the world of demons and the coming “darkness”. He is joined by Zed (played by Angelica Celaya) and Chas (played by Charles Halford) who help him along the way. Lost alumn Harold Perrineau plays an Angel who also helps Constantine, but on his terms.
What we get to see of the show is a lot of set up of the larger story arc that never plays out, and a serialized case of the week kind of show that usually involves Constantine trying to vanquish some evil force. It is a pretty trippy show, probably too much so for “regular” network TV. We find out that it does exist in the Arrowverse, when the CW resurrected the character (including a great dead peacock feather line) in season 4 of Arrow. Of course there was no hint of that however during the series run itself. I have never read the comics so I am not sure how true it held to that story, but I did think for the small amount of the show we got it was well written and acted. Hopefully the character can show up on Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, or Flash again at some point, but otherwise this is all that we will likely get of the series.
For those who get the discs, it is a MOD blu ray set. There are a handful of extras, basically a couple comic con panel discussions (the Constantine one and the Larger DC TV one with the cast of Arrow, Flash and Constantine from 2014. There are also some deleted scenes. Okay for what is there, but not a ton.
