Dog Days

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

The best part of this film is Tara’s chihuahua who goes about in a pink military helmet with googly eyes and wings on it. Apparently, the helmet is needed to protect the ‘soft spot’ on her skull that hasn’t yet come together (aawwww…). It’s dangerously cute. Let’s face it, dogs are adorable and this film makes the most of our canine buddies to twist our hearts around their little paws. Unfortunately, it’s not enough to save this film from a fatal flaw: There are just too many plotlines going at the same time and not enough time to care about any of them. There are several love stories, friendship stories, coming of age stories, family stories, and a couple of love triangles in this movie- their only real connection is their profound love of dogs. You never get a chance to fall in love with any of the characters- or dogs for that matter! You never get invested. Which is too bad because there was one storyline in particular which could have made a great film. Walter (played beautifully by Ron Cephas Jones) is a grumpy old man who meets Tyler (Finn Wolfhard) after ordering pizza. Tyler insults Mabel for ‘being so fat’, which makes Walter feel guilty for not taking better care of her. When Walter takes Mabel out for a walk, Tyler ends up being responsible for her loss. This causes both individuals great distress- and eventually leads the two into an emotion journey which they undertake together. Had the movie focused on this strong storyline and kept only a few other satellite storylines around it, it could have been a blockbuster. But it didn’t, which is too bad because this film does leave a nice warm feeling in your heart, especially if you love dogs. It’s just too busy to meet the requirements of a good film. In the end, if you love dogs and are looking for a family friendly movie for a Sunday night with young kids, this is a nice movie. But if you are older and looking for more exciting, sophisticated fare, this movie is a skip for you. Oh, the dog psychologist bits were great. Three stars- at best. (p.s. some of the funniest parts are in the credit footage!)- Susan

Great movie! Sweet story line, and I wish there were more movies like this. Also, I’m not sure what the prude that wrote the review about it not being safe for children to view is talking about. Wonderful family movie for all ages, and I would actually give this movie a “G” rating. Definitely a “feel good” movie, and I highly recommend it.-CrazyDogLady

Hilarious and truly inspirational for the dog lovers among us! Reminded me of myself (and my dog) more than once! Btw: NOT too many plot lines and no “fatal flaw” (except maybe for those who need a PG movie to show their kids, as there was some suggestiveness). If you love dogs and are mature enough to tolerate typical PG-13 additions, it’s a movie you will never regret renting (or buying). It’s my new favorite! I have Modern Dog magazine to thank for recommending it!-Hilarious and truly inspirational for the dog lovers among us! Reminded me of myself (and my dog) more than once!
